It's some kind of foam. It's a fairly inexpensive breather so I wasn't expecting a lot. At least it's not paper.

Q: Will it fit 1 inch hole?

It might fit a 1 in hole but I know it will not fit a 3/4 hole.

No, the Spectre Performance 4299 .75" Push-In Breather with Grommet will not fit a 7/8" hole.

Q: Will this fit in a stock 1979 5.7 350 chevy valve cover hole?

The I.D. of the grommet is about 3/4". The O.D. is a smidge less than 1 1/4" (31mm). The groove is a smidge less than 1/4" wide. The O.D. at the groove is a smidge less than 1 1/4". Measure the hole in your valve cover.
