Q: are these neodymium magnets?

I don't know. The back is black and it would seem to be ferrite magnet powder and rubber, coating the the entire shape of the planets, as they are flexible and plastic like in appearance. They stick well to a fridge and a metallic white board.

Q: How big are these ? Could I use children's magnets to pick them up and lay them out in a tuff tray?

They are to hang from the ceiling. Quite small. Don't think you could pick them up with magnets. You can get magnetic one's. They are ideal to put on a table or tray. Hope this was helpful!
