Q: Has anyone tried to put a 17" laptop in this bag. My laptop has a 17" screen diagonally but it measures 15" wide.

Yes it will fit. I have a laptop that size and just tried it, it just has enough room end to end 15". If you were planning on carrying a lot in the water bottle pouches it may not be as easy to get the laptop in and out just keep that in mind.

Q: Will a tough book (cd-31)fit in this bag?

I have a large Todhiba and it fits with ease. I can't say with certainly but feel it will fit. I love my bag. Hope this helps

They are not random. The bag is extremely adaptable to storing all sorts of things - including a sort of "hidden" compartment that makes everyone who sees it jealous. There are velcro areas for attaching tags that could have a company logo, or your name, etc. on them. The military uses the same style. It's a great bag, and even if you don't use all the features, you'll love the ones that you do use.

Q: Will this bag stand upright on its own when lightly loaded with a coffee cup, jacket, and a other few odds and ends?

It should. Depending on how you have the jacket positioned, it may fall over. I've had the bag for years with no real issues around it tipping.
