It is because the mesh netting is cut at a slight diagonal/angle for easy access into the pouch (for getting to earbuds)
I use this tablet regularly with my Fire 8 HD tablet. When setting the tablet into the pillow, I make sure to face the 2 speakers at the top so the sound is not muffled. The stuffing material of the pillow is firm, which allows the tablet to not slide or tip out of position. Yet, I can still mold/push the stuffing material into whatever position that I want and it holds. The elastic black band (that holds the tablet in place) is firm and it appears to have a built-in structure to it, so it does not stretch too much or warp. I appreciate the simple mesh netting/pocket on the right side of the pillow to hold ear buds. Though the advertisement picture shows an iPhone resting straight up in the mesh pocket, I found that my iPhone 7 would not stay upright (would tilt to the side). It is because the mesh netting is cut at a slight diagonal/angle for easy access into the pouch (for getting to earbuds); thus, the mesh netting is not really built for iPhones to hold, unless you are ok with it tipping to the side. Future recommendations: 1) mesh pocket to be straight across (no diagonal cut), and 2) mesh pockets on both sides of pillow (the pocket is only on the right side, which favors right-handed individuals).

Glad I bought it but it's not perfect
I have a 9" Nook HD+ tablet. I also have carpal tunnel syndrome from using my tablet. I was hoping this would make it easier for me to read/browse the internet/play games without having to experience the pain from holding my Nook. It does do this though it's not without its downfalls. This does sit nicely wherever you place it, whether it is on a solid surface or on your lap. The material isn't the highest quality, though it's not bad. I do kind of wish the bottom was not the fleece material and was something I could easily clean if I wanted to use this in the kitchen or someplace where it might get dirty. The tab that holds your tablet in place does hold my Nook fairly well (the tab is an inch or so tall) but this is certainly not something you are going to leave your tablet/e-reader in while you carry it around as it does not hold it in place too securely. Depending on the size of your tablet you may or may not be able to put it in vertically without it falling out easily. As for my Nook, it does block some of the on-screen functions and I do on occasion have to either pull back the tab to reach the screen at the bottom or I have to remove my Nook. This is really only for certain things, however, and does not block the ability to swipe the screen to move from one page to another when I am reading. If you have a different type of tablet you may find this hard to work with or it may not be an issue, depending on whether or not there are many functions/buttons/icons at the bottom of the screen. And it could potentially block some power buttons/volume/etc. The bottom line for me is that when I am sitting on the couch using my Nook this little pillow does a nice job of holding my tablet in place and lets my hands have a rest. When I am lying down reading it does point the screen in a position I don't really like (you really can picture this just by looking at the picture of the product) but it's OK. I do tend to put this on top of a pillow when I am sitting down so it will be higher but that is my preference. It's also nice when I have my Nook on the table. It's definitely been helpful for someone with carpal tunnel. I know there are more expensive tablet pillows on the market and they may have better features but I'm happy with this one. If you're looking for one that is going to hold your tablet securely, look elsewhere or just understand that it's not going to protect it, it's just holding it. When I take my Nook out of the house, I put it back in a case and leave the pillow at home.

Works great for holding my Samsung Tablets!
I like this tabket pillow I purchased two of them. This tablet pillow works well on my Samsung 9.7, 10.1 and 8 tablets. It works well in portrait and landscape when I read eBooks or get onto internet in bed. What I do is take my tablet cover off for best results. However, each tablet has a ultra slim foldable cover, I flip the thin top cover back and each tablet fits up higher that way. What I like best about this pillow is that it is not too large or bulky, it fits into my backpack for travel!FIRMNESS FIX: To make this pillow stand firmer I placed in each end pocket, a black sock...this firmed up the pillow stand and nkw my tablet is more secure in the pillow stand. My rating is 4.7 stars because the pillow could have been made a bit firmer...yet I fixed that.

shaky
I accidentally bought this with 1-click ordering but they refunded me with no hassle well after they shipped it. So great response time from them!I was still interested in this, though. The problem is, that it doesn't really have a sturdy shape. The pictures give the impression of a stable looking object when it's really more than a weirdly shaped soft pillow with a shallow flap. If you can get your device positioned then you better not move too much or it will fall out. Reading is difficult unless you can go by without the few inches on the bottom. Playing games is difficult because you use your hands a lot for that and that brings on movement that will jostle the pillow.I'd say it's pretty good for watching videos. But, don't move too much!

The perfect pillow stand for all iPads with the exception of the iPad Pro
We purchased 3 of these for our daughters and each one of them absolutely love them! I was concerned at first that the lip which holds the iPad may be too tall and block part of the screen but, found that it fit perfect and that there was no screen interference. The materials are outstanding with perfect stitching and extremely soft. It so soft that you want to lay your head on it! A really nice feature is the side pockets to hold either your charger, cell phones, pencils, pens, etc. In fact it will hold them all at once! If you have an iPad Pro, I would not recommend this as it is not designed for that type of size. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. A+

Good
There's no space if you have a cover already, its not very stable for bed use, buy it if you have slim cover only!

pillow ipad holder
when you place an ipad into the retaining strap unless the surface you are using is stable and entire thing tends to fall over
