As expected with any Henle edition, fingering provided in the book is very helpful and feels natural for the hands. The print is larger than that of other publishers and the pages are an off-white so your eyes don't become fatigued during a long practice session. Book lays open flat without a music clip. Even though Henle is more expensive than other editions, it is worth the extra cost. Henle's edition will differ a little from Peters and Paderewski (specifically with ornaments), but it's not a big deal. Check out other editions, listen to several artists perform the pieces, and then decide which way to go with the embellishments.

Fantastic quality

This is a great edition (no surprise coming from Henle). The notes and fingering were very helpful but perhaps the greatest element is the clarity of the layout. The music is extremely “readable” on Henle’s beautiful paper.

Came fast and quick. Seems like a real Henle book.

Musiknoten des Henle-Verlages sind von sehr guter Qualität und Urtext-Version. Die Seiten lassen sich gut umblättern, ohne daß das gesamte Buch auseinander fällt oder beim "Spielen" der Partitur das Buch zusammen klappt. Das Papier ist dick genug, dass man die Bedruckung der Rückseite nicht sieht. Die Notenschrift ist deutlich und hat die richtige Grösse. Der einzige Nachteil ist der höhere Preis gegenüber andere Verlage. Aber für Qualität sollte man nicht sparen.

Obviously, the four ballades, written by Chopin, are fantastic. Lots of bravado and emotion. But I was disappointed that the quality of printing and paper of this Henle edition does not seem as good as the Henle from the 1970s that is in my local library. At first glance, all looks very similar, but the pages don't seem as thick or as opaque - all seems more translucent, making the print on the other side more visible. Maybe I am imagining this. As well, because of many footnotes at the bottoms of many of the pages of this edition, the staves are squished closer together than the Henle Balladen printing of the 1970s. Disappointed about these changes. I am updating this review in 2021, four years after purchasing these Ballades, as I am now playing these daily, and so have contacted the Henle company to express my frustration about the score. They responded, and are happy to know about what musicians are thinking regarding the new editions and about page lay-out. This is very encouraging to know that Henle cares about the musicians.
