Was purchased as a gift.
I read the book years ago when I was in 8th Grade(75 years ago) and was fascinated with the topic. I bought the book to give as a present to the daughter of one of my former students.

A fascinating book
The book is one that I remember from my childhood. It is a sad, heartbreaking story that resonates today.

A small but compelling book. An important read.
I read this book when I was in high school. I graduated in 1953. One day while cleaning, a poem popped into my head "Breathes there man with soul so dead, who never to himself hath said, "This is my own my native land.....I couldn't remember the whole poem but did remember the name of the book. I wanted to read it again. and was able to get it through Amazon. It should be mandatory reading for youth as well as adults today. A strong message regarding patriotism.....

Every American should read this
With all the whining and complaining about our great nation, with the unconstitutional by laws to the corruption in the FBI, we are still the best place in the world who many have fought and died for. Every child, student and adult American should read this. It should be required to graduate. But now with our dumbed down schools can many people read such profound writing and understand it? I pray it is still possible.

Thought provoking but somehow lacking substance.
This is a good book for pre-adolescent and teen-aged persons, however, not for the adult or mature adult. As a mature adult, I would have liked more background information and probably would select a different book with this one either attached or referenced to. My 26 year old son found it much more interesting than I did, not really having heard of or known the story before. In today's political climate, this book probably should be required reading in the early high school years, however, I'm afraid you'd have too much bickering over the political correctness of it. (As there is over prayer in the schools today.)It reminds us of what we do have, how often we take what we have for granted. I was not entirely happy with the way the story is presented and the ending, but would recommend others read it for the message it gives.

Life-changing Book
For those in America who think they hate their country, this book might change their mind. Or, at least give them pause to really think about how they feel.
