Elementary - Season 6 [DVD] [2018]

NTSC! Needs Blu-ray player ideally. OK, should have been 13 episodes really.
As others have noted, you need a bluray or multi format dvd player as it IS NTSC.On my Blu-ray player & 720p telly, it plays OK, but the colours are washed out somewhat which, coincidentally, is very like this season. Futurama 5 was also NTSC, but looked better.I'll try and avoid spoilers; however assuming you have seen the superb seasons 1-4 (even with John Noble's debatable Morland characterisation) you will know how it will go given the tacked on ending to season 5.It degenerated from a novel reimagining of Holmes AND Watson AND Moriarty (seasons 1-4), passes through The Shinwell Experiment (season 5), arriving at this papfest of a season (The Michael Experience). Reminds me of Stargate SG-1 seasons 7-9, where it was under constant threat of cancellation so no proper planning. This is also the problem with backordered series: 9 episodes extra instead of industry standard 13. Here it was a back 8 for some reason. With 13, even with a Writers' Room, a whole story arc can be planned and a cohesive narrative crafted. Less IS more folks! Better to have high concept, spread across fewer episodes than the usual American '100 episodes or bust.'Add 8/9 too late and it all goes to pot.Worse, lack of planning means a mush.I did love the ending though, albeit filmed in NY not London as they did in season 2. It NEVER looks right guys!I am going to buy the 7th season (at the right price, natch) to see for myself if that is as bad as they say. Hopefully not a Dallasty explanation of how H&W return to NYC!Either way, the ending is VERY American, but touching and just the right touch for ALL the characters. Shame they did not spend a wee bit more getting it right. I would have accepted episode 6.21 as THE end of Elementary.Elementary always was a tongue in cheek send up of Americana, not just UK actors being subversive to parody the whole thing.A rarity in that it was a deliberate pastiche at heart and not the usual 'it's so bad it's good' that I find with GOOD US drama - namely comedy to me.The closest to competion Elementary has/had was the BBC 'Sherlock' debacle - all concept and no substance.IE no contest at all, really. The primary reason the UK's offering "Sherlock" was such a disaster, despite good casting, was that the showrunner was Steven Moffat, who also screwed up Doctor Who (that improved slightly with SM working on Sherlock and neglecting Who).

SO MUCH TO IMPRESS, JUST ONE ASPECT TO MAR
A brain tumour? Fortunately not, but Holmes has health problems necessitating a prolonged rest. Fat chance, his chronic pent-up energy craving the outlet complicated cases will bring. This powerful sixth season has Holmes confronted by more challenges than usual - not least the activities of a serial killer ultimately causing major changes for him and Watson. The two will also have to come to terms with significant events in their families. As ever, great scripts and performances. Sadly, also as ever, an intrusive music track that reduces the impact of both - it particularly inexcusable when explanations are given or during confidences exchanged in low voices.Although so much is so strong, one theme seems rather weak - Watson's great wish to adopt a child is surely impracticable at her age (approaching 50?) with the emergencies she faces most days? Arguably she and Holmes should confine themselves to the tortoise and bees.21 episodes. Interesting bonus features. Apparently this was expected to be the final season - which probably accounts for that rather unconvincing tagged on bit at the end, and why creators select their favourite moments from the six seasons. Instead this season was extended, which meant adjustments to storylines - especially the serial killer's.Good news thus for fans. One more season to go, the series hopefully to leave on a high.

Superlative- Series Six Continues to Please Sherlock Fans.
Elementary - Season 6 is another brilliant, tightly scripted, well acted series. Each of the 21 stories has been written with care and love by a superb writing team. Now in its 6th series Elementary is always consistently good.Jonny Lee Miller continues to be the modern day Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Lui is a brilliant if not now equal foil as Joan Watson.I used to have Sky but cancelled the only series I missed was Elementary. Thankfully I am able to buy this brilliant series.Recommended.

SLIGHTLY LOST ITS WAY
This is still an entertaining show, but it is getting bogged down with characters' "personal issues" and - too often - the detective elements are pushed into second place. A series based on Sherlock Holmes should - first and foremost - comprise detective stories and not get padded out with dull "soap opera" themes. I was going to suggest that this might be an appropriate point to end the series. However, without giving too much away, there is an intriguing finale which might suggest a fresh direction for the show to take in the next series. Let us hope that in so doing the series can regain its earlier form.

On Form
Very good series as always. Never gets a shake up though, heavy lid on top of drama. Not so much excitement. On such an even level almost rigid now. Like a long, long, long marriage perhaps?? As always 5 stars. :)

Continued excellence
Season 6 starts a little slowly, but builds up pace. I wasn't expecting it to end the way not did and I'm looking forward to season 7!
