Surpassing rigorous physical and mental training, eight Japanese men live as spies in the years before World War II. Whether they’re caught in clever mysteries or enduring torture, blowing their cover is not an option, and murder and suicide are out of the question. Inspired by real events in history, this is a recollection of their endeavors.

Cleverest Anime about Espionage
Story: This anime is about a fictitious elite spy agency called "D-Agency". Their policy is "Do not kill and do not be killed". Overall, it's a great anime with some of the cleverest plot line I have seen in anime about espionage or spying.Pros: The story is quite realistic, and it's not cliche or cheesy at all. It takes itself very seriously and never falls into the modern anime trap where characters have to be 'goofballs' in order to entertain viewers. The story is entertaining in a way that it has many surprising twists and it usually revolves around human drama where characters feel like real human beings with emotion and personal history. The characters are not like James Bond either but they are closer to Jason Bourne type of intelligent spies where they focuses more on being covert than advertising their name whenever their order a martini. Each character is very intelligent and utilizes his spy training that is similar to the British intelligence service. As a viewer, you can tell that the author did a lot of researching into how western espionage work. The story is also based on historical events where Japanese military had to deal with far advanced western intelligence before the World War 2. If you like detective stories, history, or even clever plots like Death Note, you will be impressed by this anime.Cons: I can't really find any cons in this anime except that it's not very long and it's just a series of short stories of spies. Although the characters are realistic and clever, there's rarely any character development or continuous story of that individual character except for the colonel who started the spy agency. But it's still an intriguing anime that's not like other anime. It definitely stands as its own genre and you should at least check it out and see how spy stories can be brilliantly written.

Not great but good.
The anime isn't that well drawn compared to others of its kind and the story is soso, at first. Then about midway ther story gets better but then it's over! .....you begin by seeing each Japanese spy at his assignment (one per episode) then midway the real story picks up. Sad because it could've been a great anime in my opinion. This gets 3 stars only because the second half had me on the edge of my seat.

Unique!
I have never seen like anime like this one, and I was definitely in for a ride! There were a few parts throughout that seemed like a stretch, but nonetheless, it was very enjoyable for the most part! Will be watching again for sure.
