Rodale's Illustrated Cabinetmaking, How to Design and Construct Furniture that Works

A good book for any woodworker to have
This is book is about designing and constructing, it's not a how to book. For example there's a large chapter on joints. It talks about all different types of joints, when to use them, why use certain one, and has great diagrams of the joints but it won't take you step by step on how to make the joint. Most of the book is like this. It's not a book plans; instead it provides numerous example and ideas of ways to construct furniture. For me this is what I was looking for. I'm really glad I purchased it. My only problem with the book is its lack of dealing with molding. The book has about 4 pages regarding molding, where to use it, how to install it, and the different names of the shapes along with some additional information about it scattered throughout the book but adding accent molding is such an important part about constructing furniture that I which it included a complete chapter on it.On a side note, if someone out there can recommend a good book regarding furniture and molding drop me a comment.

Great book
This book is amazing. I borrowed a friends for a table I'm making and loved it so much I had to buy it for myself. And for the cheap price, why not?!

Excellent reference for any serious woodworker
As a semi-pro woodworker I found this book to be invaluable. It has detailed drawings of just about any type of joint or furniture item you can imagine. The first section is a discussion of wood and it's properties and then there is a detailed comparison of wood joints. Mortise and tenons, miters, dovetails, etc. are all discussed. Then the book moves on with chapters dealing with various classes of furniture, desks, tables, beds, cabinets are all discussed with clear exploded diagrams.Although the book does not contain detailed, measured drawings, it shows the conceptual details of how to make functional furniture. Additionally there are references to detailed plans that you can access via the internet or purchase to make typical examples of each piece.Especially helpful are the "standards" sections at the start of each chapter. The "nominal" dimensions for tables, beds, kitchen cabinets are all given along with illustrations. If you're serious about woodworking and furniture making, this book belongs on your bookshelf.

NOT a set of instructions, just terminology.
First, about the seller.Item arrived beautifully packaged, well protected and exactly as described. The seller is top notch. The book itself.. not worth the shelf space if you’re looking to build your own cabinet or furniture.I purchased this on the recommendation of a friend.I was led to believe that it was an instructional volume that taught basic cabinet making. It does not.It gives examples of styles, their basic parts and offers exploded views with labels but gives absolutely little to no information in regards to plans, cut lists or assembly.References are made on each page to plans which appear as though they may be able to be purchased through the publisher. It was a disappointment to say the least. If what you need to learn is the terminology of cabinet and furniture making, this would be the book for you.

This book was sent as a gift.
The person it was sent to really likes the clear instructions and illustrations. Great for a beginner especially; would recommend it to other potential woodworkers.
