Penn Gold Label Series Slammer Spinning Reel

I have one of these that I bought when they first came out years and years ago. still running strong and smooth also though now i have a 7 year old daughter that is into fishing, she managed to get some saltwater in it one day and corrode two bears which I just replaced. needless to say I love the reel especially at the price point so I bought her a brand new one so she can herself learn about reel maintenance and enjoy the sport of salt water fishing herself.

I had purchased this just before a trip to the coast to go sharking and I was in a rush because I had just learned my former reel had paid the price of being used in salt water for years. I had done some quick research and found the penn slammer series. While there are only 2 of them you can use for sharking, I was surprised at the amount of features for the price. The fact that you can use braided line without adding a lead monolithic line directly to the reel was the selling point that caught my eye. The gear ratio is set low but not to low just right for a good fight. I landed a 50 lb hammerhead off the bob hall and the fight lasted about 45 minutes. Awesome reel, and came in 2 days with amazon prime.

Very smooth reel! Smooth drag! Only gave 4 stars due to weight and the auto close feature for the bail is rather stiff and very clunky. One of the best reel for the money.

I mow fish for bonefish in Hawaii. I have been using my Slammer 460 for over one year now, and I've caught many bonefish with this reel. This reel has a lot of smooth stopping power!The only minor issue to me is that the case is not water tight. I'm considering getting a Spinfisher V to replace my old 4400SSG which has served me very well over the years. I also own six other older-generation spinning reels in various sizes ranging from the smallest 4200ssg to the 650SS and 850SS (both of which I've used to catch mahimahi from my boat).Am I a Penn guy? YUP!

I bought the 260 model for freshwater bass fishing, and I love it. Small, but built like a tank. All metal body and smooth reeling too. I am sure it will outlast me. Buy it while you can as this model is discontinued and getting harder to find.

I'm sorry but this reel is awful. I bought 2 of them last summer and both of them broke in about 3 days. The drag was defective on both of them. One of the reels had rust on it after the second day. What are the chances of that? A friend of my bought one too, same problem. Penn makes most of their reels in China now. The quality just isn't there anymore. If you want a quality reel stick with Shimano. If I could give this reel zero stars I would.
