Not so cool as it seems
I was disappointed, Hal Leonard usually does much better. This is more of a song book than a method.I got some other Funk methods that were cheaper and more effective.

Amazing book for practicing Funk on a bass.
This is an EXCELLENT book to begin playing Funk on a bass guitar. It has plenty of classic songs you can learn to play, plenty of techniques such as thumb and finger slaps along with pops. It also gives you an introduction as to how Funk started, how to practice, along with a CD to help tune your bass from ear. I highly recommend this book along with the others in the Bass Method series.

Very easy
The designs and the patterns demonstrate very well the styles of funk's grooves. I liked the direct method of presentation. The recordings are crisp. Visual very simple and pretty clean and easy to understand. Hal leonard rocks again!

Much ado about Funk?
Hal Leonard are a verified institution in the world of music publishing. They have accomplished legendary status in a populated section of the music self-help category.Artists from Bowie, Queen through to Iron Maiden have received the HL treatment, giving the avid musical enthusiast an opportunity to play their favourite tunes. They also cover musical genres, a new one for me.Chris Kringel was the musician tasked with giving us good ol' teaching on the art of FUNK bass. If I am brutally honest I hadn't really heard of him.Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooton and Larry Graham spring to mind when I think of funk playing - all legendary players with incredible feel and talent to match. So, after the purchase of this written module, I fully expected to be slappin' and striking away like Bootsy by the end of the book. This didn't happen. The book is a familiar jaunt resembling most HL products. The format is sensible and instructive, giving enough information to develop a basic understanding of funk playing but it is more a play through some funky songs, rather than developing the play through techniques associated with funk.I had no real problems with the book, but I couldn't help feeling empty; It didn't fill me. It lacked direction and there stood the issue, I couldn't progress. The songs were fun; include: Brick House * Can't Stop * Fire * Higher Ground * I'll Take You There * Let's Groove * Pick up the Pieces * Stay * Sumthin', Sumthin' * What Is Hip * Great tunes to play, but no further development is offered.HL need to do better progressively if they are to remain at the top of the self-instruction mountain. As a beginner, yes this book is a fantastic introduction to funk. A level above beginner you will find it frustrating and will likely leave it to the moths.Sorry HL better luck next time.
