How much do I love this book? I bought my first copy many years ago and used it so often that it came close to falling apart, so I got another copy to replace it. The third was a gift to another teacher. Simply put, The Teacher and Writers Handbook of Poetic Forms is an indispensable resource for anyone who teaches or writes poetry. The book became the basis for a creative writing class that I taught for ten years, and the lessons were accessible and fun for writers ranging from ages 9-18. It has also helped me immensely in crafting my own work. As I've sought additional guidance on form, I've supplemented this warhorse with Strong Measures: Contemporary American Poetry in Traditional Forms and Patterns in Poetry: An Encyclopedia of Forms. But for the student-friendly basics, you simply cannot beat this book!

This is perfect for learning many forms of poetry - very easy to follow and understand. Examples are provided for each form. I've found this very helpful in expanding the types of poetry I'm writing.

All professional poets, and aspiring amateurs need this handbook right after a dictionary and thesaurus. It is indeed for teachers and writers, but will serve well anyone who ever hears a reference to poetic form and forgot what it meant. If you're just beginning, the forms are in context in other texts, but when those texts are back shelf, or in boxes, this book will get your answer quickly and alphabetically.
