Australian actor and film-maker Damon Gameau presents this documentary about sugar and its impact on our bodies. In order to discover the effects of the sweet substance Damon goes on a high sugar diet for 60 days. By only eating foods that are generally considered to be healthy he exposes the truth about what these products actually contain and whether they are really good for us, as we have been led to believe. The film features appearances from Stephen Fry, Isabel Lucas and Brenton Thwaites and includes interviews with experts Gary Taubes, Michael Moss and Kimber Stanhope.

Entertaining, informative and very worrying, but without resorting to extreme terms like poison.
Watch a healthy non-sugar consumer change before your eyes over just 60days in health, happiness and size as he consumes the same number of calories as previously, but basically swaps his calorie-dense 'good fats' for so-called healthy foods to increase his sugar intake to that of an average Australian. Be amazed as he manages to consume nearly 30teaspoons of sugar for breakfast, without a sugary cereal in sight or a similar quantity from a child's lunch box without a single sweet, chocolate bar or fizzy drink. I could go on, but you don't want any more spoilers!Very entertaining as well as informative. Probably particularly eye opening for some people who think they already follow a healthy diet (juice, muesli, health bars, dried fruit, smoothies, low fat yogurt etc). For me there was nothing in here that I didn't already know, BUT the information is conveyed extremely well, without extremism, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite my open-mouthed horror on occasions and the very worrying content. It would play particularly well to children of a reasonable age if you're trying to get to a healthier lifestyle as a family and should be compulsory viewing for every parent or parent-to-be. I'd like to think it would stop even teenagers in their tracks, but they are tough cookies if you'll pardon the pun, so maybe a wish too far.To be honest I feel that absolutely everyone should watch this, then whether you act on the information is your choice, but at least you will have seen the possible consequences of an average level of sugar consumption and be able to make a decision or research it further. If you decide against watching this, please just take home this one point: 1teaspoon of sugar is approximately 4g so try looking at some of the non-sweet food you buy, work out the sugar it contains in teaspoons and ask yourself whether you really intended to consume that much sugar - I suspect the answer is no.

Worth watching
Another film about what goes into the modern diet, this time with the emphasis on sugar. Quite shocking in parts, quite funny in others. I am not a scientist and so cannot really comment on the accuracy of the science on offer here.

Best DVD you could buy
I love this film (and the book). Unlike "super size me" it is very realistic. I'm very active but never shifted any weight. Granted, I have a lot of muscle but there was no denying that I still had a fair bit of chub! What was I doing wrong?? I didn't think I ate that much sugar. I know I have an addiction to it but I didn't think it played such a part in my moods and weight. After reading and watching this I did a food diary for a week. And yes! I was eating 39tsps of sugar a day! Whhhaaat! I have now been sugar free for 6 weeks. My moods are stable, I no longer crash and burn, I really enjoy my meals and can't finish them most of the time! Ive lost 11lbs so far and looking pretty lean! I tell anyone that will listen about going sugar free (ha) most of which have given it a go and they all have similar results. The main thing for me is the lack of desire and cravings. Thank you so much for this realisation!

Well made, humorous and informative
I personally have found quitting sugar to have been transformational in improving my wellbeing, both physical and mental. My energy levels have gone up, many ailments and illness have disappeared. Now while people are getting sick with winter coughs and colds I'm getting through it in full health. If I ever cave in to temptation I wake up with adrenalin surges in my stomach in the middle of the night. I used to think this was work stress and that I needed to work on relaxing. Now that I have experienced This film really motivates me to stay 'clean' by reminding me that I'm not weak by feeling tempted by treats, or that my body is craving it because it needs a boost, but in fact I'm being expertly manipulated by ruthless food manufacturers that know exactly what they are doing for the sake of their profits. I like the presenter in the documentary because he's an every day guy that I can associate with and he's lively and funny too. There's a good does of humour in this film to keep it entertaining and it's well made too.

Will change how you look at food
Well, it will change how you eat and how you look at the supermarket shelves, that's for sure. Some of the specialists who talk during the film are actually known to be dubious, so take it with a grain of salt, as it were.

Superbly Edited Reality Show Of A Modern Disaster
Freshly presented information from specialty knowledge authorities blended with a real life experience of consuming a diet equivalent to the westernised average for sugar additives. More interesting still that Stephen did not consume any more actual calories than he did prior to his change and yet gained weight and a gut to match! Even with no soda drinks, sweets, etc, he could easily outdo standard intake of sugar with regular foods. In the same vein as the documentary on consuming McDonalds three times a day. Yet much more interesting as this is the standard diet of the majority of people in the west, metastasising to most of the world. With his commitment to improving the health of Aboriginal people growing from this, it is even more compelling.Well edited to keep it moving and not over-heavy. Great easily digestible information on a worldwide disaster.

Did you think your food was healthy?
This was a well presented film, down to earth but not as biased or haranguing as some others. Liked the guy who was healthy but not manic, and the effect the fast food regime had on his body in such a short time. Not a mad biased diet for shock effect, but what the vast majority of people would consider a normal healthy diet. Terrifying.

Watch this video and change your life
This movie is life changing IF you are willing to listen. We are sugar free now thanks to this video. More importantly we have made huge improvements in our health. I am talking not just about losing weight without trying I am talking about correcting potentially deadly medical conditions and going off of medications. There are warnings you need to know about if you are going to go off of sugar. First get a blood pressure meter if you are on medications for high blood pressure. My better half went off sugar and sugary natural foods (sweet fruits, juices, potatoes, breads and starches) with the result that his blood pressure medications were making him ill. We called the GP who insisted it was an allergy to one of the BP medications because "you do not suddenly stop needing blood pressure medications due to dietary changes" She was wrong. If you stop eating sugar you start eating other things and your blood pressure can normalize very quickly. Expect radical personality changes - improved sex drive, better mood (once you adjust) and feeling much healthier and more energized. In addition to our behavior that of our 6 year old daughter's behavior changed radically. Yes, you can mitigate many of the symptoms of Asperger's by removing sugar! Expect to need new clothes. There is that wonderful feeling that comes with losing weight without having to work for it. You will find that vegetables are sweet and that things considered too tart to eat without sugar now have a sweet taste. As an example with time I found myself getting the same taste reaction to lemon water that I used to get from lemonade. On the down side you will never enjoy the taste of sweets again. Ick. You would not believe how nasty sugary treats now taste.
