Wrong assembly instructions and 2 cross threaded bolts.
Nice mower but arrived with assembly instructions for wrong mover and two bolts to attach handle were cross threaded, so I had to use a hammer to gently tap them out of the holes to be able to fit the handles. Box was sealed with brown polythene tape which was coming apart. Nothing was damaged so accepted the package.

Pity about quality control
Having bought my son a Mountfield with a Honda engine of a similar spec last Autumn, I looked for the same model but clearly has been dropped. Shame really as my last mower, a Laser from B&Q had a Honda engine which lasted near 20 years with only one oil changed. It still runs but the front wheels are falling off!!So this machine was ordered and arrived promptly. Bit tricky to lift out of box. I did consider cutting down the box corners to be able to roll it out but didn't in case I needed to return to return the machine. There was no indication of where the supplied allen (hex) key was to be found clipped onto the machine. The lower handle was fitted with four screws but why was the hex key clipped off to a screwdriver shape on its long end? As far as I could see, there were no straight slot screws that needed tightening. I used a full size allen key from my shed. That made getting passed the rear wheels to tighten the lower handle screws much easier. Then I tried to fit the upper handle and discovered the left-hand bolt hole had not been punched through. I could have drilled it out but decided that might invalidate the warranty. Mountfield, when contacted, were very helpful and a new handle arrived two days later. Next I discovered there was no spanner to tighten the self locking nut that holds the guide for the starter pull cord. A pair of pliers is needed at least but the self locking bolt is stiff and a 10 mm ring spanner or adjustable wrench is needed. Assembly was easy after that.I did read reviewers who said the grass collection basket was tricky to assemble and I agree. Strong fingers are needed and checking all the plastic prongs have slip into place is essential. Why not design a one piece collapseable box as my 20 year old machin had and I guarantee it would be cheaper to make. The multi-language intructions are printed in tiny lettering and hard to follow as the UK version is in somewhat pidgin English. Machine appears to be made in Slovakia, the engine in Italy and instructions in Italian and then loosely translatedAs no oil is shipped with the mower so be sure you buy some when you order the machine. I happened to have a 15 year old unopened bottle of Mountfield mower oil and used that but will change it for new stuff as recommended after a few hours running. Also buy some kind of hand operated extractor syringe to get the oil out as the filler hole is awkwardly placed. Amazon sella fine one. A funnel helps for putting the oil in..The engine started on the second pull and ran fine. Shame there is no throttle and thus idle position or choke setting but apparently new rules on environment control don't allow throttles as the engines don't run as efficently. Pity then you have to press a primer button three time before starting the engine. Some lawnmower engines manage to do without this as well.So all in all,, I like the low 20 mm cut and the single height adjustment lever but will reserve judgement on the starting ability until after a winter in a damp, cold garage.Mountfield could do better in the quality control on this machine. Thus the three stars but I have no doubt the machine will cut the grass.....

Superb piece of machinery
I love this mower, engine runs really smooth, the blades cuts nice and the lawn finish is fabulous. One tip, I was told before you pop your mower away for winter leave the engine running until all the fuel burns off, otherwise your leave residue all over the carburetor and it'll struggle to start next year...

Starts first time, every time
Bought this 10 months ago. A bit heavy but no more than you would expect. Starts first time, every time. What more can you ask from a petrol mower. Cuts lawn in nice stripes. Highly recommended.

Same Old Same Old!!
Other than the instruction problem, I had EXACTLY the same experience as GA Bryant. 1 bolt didn't fit and grass box assembly was very hit and miss. It's a flimsy soft plastic relying on friction to hold it in place. Mine started falling apart as soon as a decent quantity of clippings put some weight into it and grass started flying everywhere. Strangely, with the weight in it, I found it slightly easier to snap together & problem is now resolved. Not what I expected from the name "Mountfield". The oil filler is VERY fiddly and people with large hands might struggle. Corners being cut somewhere??? My previous mower was set on the 2nd lowest cutting height, the Mountfield is TOO low for me on the 2nd lowest, I've moved it up one notch to avoid "scalping".

Excellent mower
Excellent product. Best mower I have ever had. Powerful but very quiet engine and cuts and collects grass very well. Very easy to adjust cutting heights as well compared to other mowers I have had over the years.

Four Stars
A fair priced, solidly built mower. Only downside is that the oil filler is positioned badly.
