Can the sewing feature of this machine be used to sew leather and other thick materials?

I probably would not unless it was a thin piece. That type of material is better left to a specific machine built for that. I would hate to think I burned up the motor on my 1,000 embroidery machine trying to sew a straight stitch in a leather piece.

I have problems with the thread staying in the channels when winding the bobbin? The thread does not go and stay around the tension disc as shown

I never wind a bobbin on my machines. I purchased the sidewinder at Joann fabrics use your 50% off coupon as it costs $35.00. My Janome dealer recommended it years ago when I got thread caught up in my machine winding bobbins and it was costly to fix. Also it does wear and tear on your machine that should be used for sewing. You use a lot of bobbin thread when embroidering and this is handy for winding extra bobbins while your machine is stitching merrily away. Hope this helps. I advise my friends who are new to embroidery to get it.

Is there a video that comes with the machine on how to set it up and how to use the embroidery feature?

I had a hard time figuring out the embroidery tool as a complete beginner. It wasn’t till my pro mother-in-law came over to help that I stopped destroying my items. My main problem was that most embroidered fabric requires not only the right kind of stabilizer under the fabric but also a “topper.” The instructions do not explain this well. I took a class at a local quilting shop and now I am embroidering quite well.
