Exquisite Chef, most natural, healthy, nutritious ingredients, equals probably the best cuisine in the world, truly macrobiotic (longer, healthy life).Book is easy on the eyes (pix) and reading (language), content is full, and you get a sense of wanting to immerse in its secrets and tasting pleasures. Agree - try before you buy
I generally like macrobiotic food and recipes, but found the ones in this book rather too fussy and Japanese-based. The recipe combinations were not down-to-earth enough for my tastes. I also found the layout a bit scatty. Agree with reviewer who suggests you look at the recipes in the book first in a library to check if its your "cup of tea" before buying the book.

one of the best macrobiotic cookbooks I've seen
This may well be the best macrobiotic cookbook I've ever seen, and I have several of them. Mayumi was Madonna's personal chef for several years and this is her first cookbook. Macrobiotic diets are quite often given to cancer patients and others with serious illness and it's mainly based around Japanese style of cooking grains, vegetables and beans, though nothing is really excluded. They do allow fish and other animal proteins in moderation if you really have to. This book in fact has a couple of fish recipes which stops it from being a vegan cookbook, but take those away and it's basically vegan. However, what she has done in addition to the usual Japanese influence over the food, is to macrobioticize (is that even a word?) some western type dishes as well. So there is a recipe in there for pizza, spring rolls, a really fantastic looking fruit flan, brownies, pasta etc. Lots of salad ideas, lots of soups, and best of all, lots of pictures! I hate cookbooks with no pictures. This one has loads. It also tells you how to make the basics, lots of sauces, the best way to smoke tofu, make tofu cheese etc and again pictures of practically everything mentioned. I'm really very impressed and excited about this book. (I don't know why but there are a few weird typos in the book too, like words or half a sentence missing, like someone's fingers slipped on the word processor, very odd but doesn't detract from the awesomeness of this book, although I would prefer an edited copy with no omissions and typos just to satisfy my OCD)

My favourite Macrobiotic Book
This is a wonderful book. I read it cover to cover as soon as it arrived and the kids were tucked up in bed.Mayumi is expertly qualified to write this book and has created beautiful, achievable recipes. With her ten day menu she gives tips on planning meals ahead - something very important for any Macrobiotic home cook - and that is making extra to carry over to the next day.In my bookshelf are The Macrobiotic Way, Modern Day Macrobiotics and the two books by Eric Lechasseur and Sanae Suzuki - and this is definitely my favourite of all of them. Mayumi has a very friendly and engaging writing style and likewise her recipes are appealing, simple, delicious and not at all difficult or overly complex. If you think you want this book I would definitely recommend you buy it.The photos are a treat as well.
