Q: are these made of aluminum or some other metal?

They are made of cast aluminum. I wash by hand. They produce beautiful cookies and if you hand wash there is no oxidation on the metal.

Q: How do you get the effect in the pictures? Use dough balls and cut away excess dough around the edges?

I just use very sharp paring knife and cut excess dough while stamper is still on the dough, I don’t know this will help you or not
