Collocations are Collocations. Classifying them into all these categories doesn't help in understanding them, quite the contrary. A more practical and simpler approach for their use was preferable.

I am an ESL teacher but I am not a native English speaker. I bought two books: "Oxford Collocations Dictionary" and this one. I love both. They complement each other. I would recommend "English collocations in use" for ESL teachers and English learners.

A useful and well organized approach to teaching more complex vocabulary to ESL adults. The first 10 lessons explain the basics of collocations and how they are used, including a brief treatment of phrasal verbs. The remaining 50 lessons focus on vocabulary for various situations and functions. Each lesson has a page of vocab list + explanation, plus a second page of exercises (for which there's an answer key in the back). Sometimes I use the lessons as-is, and sometimes I select parts for my lesson plan. I bought both the intermediate and advanced Collocations books, and found that even when they discuss some of the same topics, the word lists and explanations are complementary rather than overlapping -- so if you're not sure which level to buy, start with the intermediate and get the advanced soon after; you'll probably end up using both together. I also have both the intermediate and advanced versions of Phrasal Verbs in Use in the same series and by the same authors, and they also complement and reinforce the verb sections of the Collocations books. I can highly recommend all four. The free delivery by Amazon was quick and trouble-free.
