The best book available on Nat Turner and his insurrection. Greenberg presents a variety of conflicting discussions written by contemporary scholars. Very useful!

My vantage point. I read history topically. For example, this book is an extension of my reading on slavery and slave rebellions in the early US. Many years ago, I read the Confessions of Nat Turner which was interesting and engaging, but did not present itself as a research document. Nat Turner: A slave rebellion... describes the controversies associated with Confessions. Topics include writing from a white perspective, no exploration of the historical Nat Turner and what led him to rebel, and with whom he met and what he said in the brief interval between capture and execution. The format of the book is a topic and then chapters by authors who are experts in the topic. The topics are explored enough to provide information and perspective without being exhausting. Conclusions are drawn from document review and other information. I was pleased by the skillfulness of the various writers in communicating to a regular person like myself rather than writing to colleagues and student. From my perspective, the book satisfied my need to know.

This book changed my life forever. I once thought the notorious Nat Turner was just an angry negro who reacted to the best of his knowledge due to his harsh living environment, but this book proved otherwise. Not only was Nat Turner a wild heretic with a no-nonsense attitude, but his extreme hate for whites came from God's hidden intentions! That's right folks, God told Nat to kill those white men, therefore, I have concluded that God is racist, Jesus was black, and all white people are damned to an eternity of Hell and torment. Thanks Kenneth Greenberg! You changed my life for the greater good!

My professor read passages from this book, which made me run home and purchase my own copy to add to my library. I couldn't wait to read it fully to learn about this brave man.
