The Crown of Oaths and Curses (The Mortal Fates Book 1)

now THIS is enemies to lovers done right
Once again J Bree has welcomed us into a new world that I am addicted to already. I’m not a massive fantasy reader but I was so engrossed in the fantastic world building that was easy for me to follow and enjoy, I could picture the places as they were mentioned and described.Meeting Rooke and Soren in the novellas (which I would recommend reading first because of the extra detail given for the history of their war) and seeing them here is almost like different people, their character development already strong and changing, especially Rooke. No longer is she a more sheltered witch but a strong warrior who is SEVERELY underestimated.Oh Soren, the way I wanted to shake you for your stubborn narrow minded ways. Now he doesn’t hold back and this book is a fantastic proper enemies and I’m waiting on the lovers part book! There are many side characters who I absolutely love, the Goblin King and Prince being well up there. I also am intrigued by Rookes besties (low-key hoping for jealousy for Soren as they’re all guys, wink wink) from the other lands and hope they and her brother come back in the following books.. especially because swords will fly for how her treatment has been!Really looking forward to watching Soren GROVEL because Rooke isn’t taking any less and the absolute queen deserves the most.

Wow!
I was sceptical about Bree venturing into the fantasy genre, but I need not have worried. I devoured this book. The world building, the back story the strong characters. This book delivered it all, effortlessly. Rooke is a witch with a traumatic past, hated by everyone around her, vilified and treated poorly. I loved how her character whilst fierce and determined was also at times so kind and caring. Soren is a man full of hatred for the witches and to find out his mate is one is a bitter blow for him. He treats her appallingly with cruelty and disdain. Even when she has proven herself time and time again, he turns on her, his old fears not allowing him to believe that she is different. It was amazing to read of her demonstrating her power and obliterating the enemy as Soren watched on and the realisation dawning that his fated mate had saved them all with her power and her magic. This is an enemies to lovers read on a scale like no other. The hatred and prejudice between these two glitters. I look forward to Rooke giving him hell in book two and him on his knees begging to win her favour and admit that he was so wrong about her. A true five star read.

Excellent female lead (5 stars for her!) but toxic males!
I love Rooke. I have never loved a female lead as much as I do her. She’s amazing, fierce, loyal and such a badass (in a good way!). She deserves so much, much more than she gets in this book. If you’re expecting romance, or even a happily ever after, you wont get it here. The story building is amazing though, it is tense, and I enjoy that Rooke keeps her secrets and we find out about them slowly. The ending was epic!Spoilers***I absolutely detest Soren. It is the reason this isn't a 5 star review. In fact I think I detest most of the characters for their hatred and mistreatment of Rooke. It is actually horrific. I understand this comes for prejudice and the wars with witches BUT Rooke shows great character and patience with them and gets nothing back. There is zero redeeming qualities from them, and I really do not understand why J Bree has made it this way. There is no empathy and they are just plain mean. The fact we have POV from Soren and there is no leeway from him, until she literally saves his life and the whole village is what gets me. He feels no guilt or anything. What is more frustrating is 99% of the book is written this way for the characters - only one character redeems herself and thats the princess. Maybe her husband too …I actually considered giving this 3 stars, that’s how annoyed I am with THE MAJORITY of the male characters in this book! I have said a lot about Soren but his behaviour is reflected in most of them. Rooke is the reason I have stuck to 4, I would have given it 5 star for her alone. I cant wait to read how she gets on next. To be honest I wish the prince was dead and she married the Goblin Kings son. But Fate eh? Prince Soren does not deserve to be king. I don’t know how J Bree is going to change my mind but I hope she does.

Oh my god. So so so so good.
One of the best books I've read this year. I've absolutely fallen in love. This is 100% slow burn, but it feels so worth it. I hope the grovelling is going to be EPIC. I'm so excited.Such a good story, and I loved the FMC. Amazing. So excited for the next book!

What a journey the first book is!
This has just become my favourite read of 2024 so far and I don't say that likely!Rooke is such a fantastic female character, one that is understanding and kind even when the characters around her don't deserve it. She is also fearless, a proper warrior in her own right who is extremely powerful and very talented with a sword.Soren on the other hand is challenging at times I must admit. He has that typical arrogance that the fae has, however he does have a good heart and cares for his people. I'm looking forward to his what i hope will be his redemption arc in the second book as he really needs it after how he has treated Rooke in this book. Its very much an enemies to lovers story with his story being just about developing the enemies aspect of the trope as it is a very slow burn but I do 100% believe that it will be worth it!I love the friendships Rooke has began to within the circle. I'm interested in seeing how these are going to play a part in the next book and I really hope we get to meet Rooke friends from the southern lands along with her brother too!Overall, Rooke is a Queen and now we need Soren to become the King that he needs to be.

Amazing! Could not put down!
I LOVE this author! I read the broken bonds series first (and loved it) and was thrilled to find out she was starting a new series. I did not put this book down, it is fantastic. The slow burn, true enemies to lovers vibes; great world building; and captivating plot all kept me sucked in. Please give us book 2!!

Patience and Reward
J. Bree is, hands down, one of my favorite authors at the moment. If I was more skilled in participating in things like TikTok/Booktok and Bookstagram (are those even things..?) I would dedicate them almost entirely to her. I am the type of reader that runs the gamut of genres. I love quick smutty reads, and I love the drawn out, verbose works. I love everything from PNR to Contemporary to Fantasy; RH to M/M. I say all of this because I read some of these reviews, especially the lower star versions, and I couldn't help but think: the negativity you're displaying here is entirely focused on the way she writes, not the story itself. It would be like if they picking up a Jane Austen novel and complained in a review saying "this book was bad because there wasn't any spice!" Well, no, there wouldn't be. That wasn't how she wrote. The same can be said for J. Bree. Her writing is spectacular. Her world building is bar none. This story is unique and beautiful. This book is thiccccccccc and JUST THE BEGINNING!!!! J. Bree NEVER does anything without purpose. She is drawing out the building of worlds and trickle of flashbacks for a reason. I have complete and utter faith that when the next few books come out, we will wholly appreciate the time she has spent focusing on the details and building that tension.I delayed reading the two novellas and this novel as long as I could. I have a love/hate relationship with how long the time period between releases is in that I LOVE that her books turn out magically fantastic as a result, and yet I'm selfishly frustrated that I can't plow through them all at once. I obviously couldn't hold on any longer. So I read them, and suffered through what I think is a fairly benign and mild cliffhanger (hello did you read Forced Bonds???? That was a million times worse!) after what was arguably one of the most awe-inspiring, LOTR-style amazingness, thrilling scenes I've ever read.So I will reread the novellas and this novel as the others are released. And then I'm sure I'll review the series when I'm finished. But here is my advice: if you're impatient for the romance/spice, or dislike how wordy this book might be, just be patient and WAIT. Wait until the series is complete. Wait to see what a gift it will be when you realize she spent the time in this novel building and preparing the reader for all the amazing things to come. If you can handle your impatience and aren't going to riot over the fact there are no smexy times in this book, then go ahead and read it now. And you can join me as we patiently (and anxiously) wait for the next installments.
