Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD - Up to 560MB/s - CT1000MX500SSD1(Z)

I purchased the Crucial MX500 1 TB SSD to upgrade my old Sony laptop, which had been getting painfully slow. The installation process was straightforward, and once I had everything set up, the difference in performance was night and day. My laptop now boots up in seconds, and programs that used to take forever to load are now lightning fast. The build quality of the SSD is excellent. It’s compact and fits perfectly into the 2.5-inch drive bay of my laptop. The included instructions were clear and helpful, making the upgrade process smooth even for someone who isn’t particularly tech-savvy. After getting my ssd I thought it would be plain sailing as I have fitted hundreds of HDd’S, it wasn’t, and after connecting my usb sata dock I expected it to find it in the disc manager, wrong, it wasn’t there. After fiddling about trying a new sata lead still no joy, ended up connecting as an internal, didn’t work either, I thought I had a duff one. One last attempt I cleaned the sata connector on the drive and hay presto it found it, I initialised it, quick formatted it and installed windows. Working fine so far. Crucial s answer is to return it. Didn’t contact Amazon so can’t comment on what their solution would have been. A good ssd drive, but if you have trouble set it up as an internal, initialise it and quick format it Before you try using it as an external, doing this eliminates any fault other that the drive itself. I hope this helps other purchasers. A good drive once you get it working. My machine now boots in 30 seconds or less, a big difference from the 3-4 minutes it use to take. Having experienced the speed increase the SSD has made, I’ve now purchased another one, no problems this time, just fitted it and installed the OS and that was it, no messing about with this one. and it has, like the other, given my lappy a new improved speed increase. Great product. Recommended product I have now been using both my 1tb SSDs, and they have been faultless, the speed increase has given my machines (laptop and desktop) has taken them back to faster speeds then i got when they were new. Unless Microsoft continue to slow things down so you purchase new machines, mine will last another year or two before I have to replace them UPDATE, Well it’s 2022 and yes the SSDs are still working without errors, and yes I’m still using both desktop and the same lappy, (although I do have others all fitted with the SSDs.) so I still recommend them, and I have even experimented installing windows 11 without the TPM and yes, just as fast, but I’m back on win10, just can’t get to like 11 layout but keep buying the Crucial SSDs, I have hammered mine and they have proved very reliable, I don’t know what their eventual life span is as they do wear out but so far so good.

I did a lot of research on internal and external SSD drives for upgrading my old (2011) iMac. The consensus was that Samsung can not always play friendly with old Macs and to go for Crucial or OWC, as these were designed with Macs in mind. I went for the internal Crucial 1TB SSD to upgrade my external HDD drive (which was plugged into a slow USB2 port). I placed the drive into a mains powered mount, and plugged it (via an adaptor) into the Thunderbolt 2 port on the iMac. So this setup gives me the equivalent of a modern USB3-C SSD style setup that has become the norm to replace the slower, older standard that I had. It sounds fiddly and cumbersome, but actually it is no more hassle and takes no more space than my old Seagate HDD external USB2 drive. And is a hell of a lot faster and quieter!! I'm not that technical when it comes to giving specs, speeds and benchmark tests, and I'm sure other reviewers will provide that data. But there is no doubt this is a seriously fast upgrade to my old system. It's like having a new Mac, only I spent less than £100! The reason I went for an internal drive in a mount rather than external SSD is because of the Thunderbolt 2 issue on the iMac (I won't bore you with it). But it does mean that if I want to buy more memory in future I will save money by just buying internal SSD drives rather than the more pricey external USB-C units. If you are reading this and you also have an old Thunderbolt 2 Mac (e.g. mid 2011 iMac), and are thinking of doing the same thing - the mains powered mount I used (in the attached photo) is from Ugreen, and I got it here on Amazon. I also got a Thunderbolt 2 to USB3-A adaptor by Kanex, also here on Amazon. Very happy with his turbocharged setup, saved me from forking out for a brand new Mac!

This is only my second Crucial SSD. The other one was purchased 8 years back - M4 128GB SSD. My intention at the time of purchasing the first drive was to speed up my PC and make it sort of future-proof for couple of years. It still rocks the PC! I have been using the M4 SSD for 8 years straight, as the primary/system drive on my PC. This means it gets used every single day. Now let me be clear, I do not transfer huge amounts of files to and from the drive everyday. But, it's the drive on which all temporary files get written everyday from all activities (Productivity, Web-browsing, Photo-editing and light gaming). It has been more than 70% full almost it's entire life and performance has never dipped nor has the drive ever given me any trouble. As per the S.M.A.R.T report, it still has 87% of its life left! This makes Crucial one of the first makes that I recommend to anyone looking for an alternative to Samsung drives. As I am (reluctantly) retiring my 10 year old PC, I wanted to save all my important data on an drive which I could plug into my new system or laptop. I would require a minimum 1TB drive as the amount of data was about 550GB. SSDs are the only way I see future storage; therefore, the choice for me was choosing between a PCI-e or a SATAIII SSD. The logical choice would have been to go with a PCI-e drive as these are faster and have (theoretically) longer life spans. However, there are 2 main reasons I chose to go with a SATAIII device: 1. Installation possibilities: As I was not sure if I would be getting a laptop or PC next, I wanted to be sure that whichever drive I purchase now could be installed in the new PC or laptop. Most current PC motherboards do allow for multiple PCI-e drives to be installed, but only very high-end current laptops are able (?) to take multiple PCI-e drives. As most laptops have a SATAIII drive either as a primary drive or as an existing/upgradeable secondary drive, it made more sense to get a SATAIII drive. 2. Cost: PCI-e drives have not caught up yet with SATAIII drives in terms of GB per dollar. The MX500 1TB has the best performance per GB per dollar (if there is such a term) ratio from my research. There was another possibility, get a PCI-e drive and use an enclosure or adapter. I've read that, in these cases the performance of the drive dips to speeds and bandwidth supported by the enclosure or adapter. This sounded like defeating the purpose of a PCI-e. I would rather have a proper functioning drive working to its maximum (rated) performance capability. Currently, I am using this drive with a UGREEN USB 3.1 Type C to SATA enclosure till I am able to install it in the new system. Therefore, I cannot state the performance figures of the drive itself. There is a huge amount of information on the performance of the MX500 drives on the internet. I would encourage anyone thinking of purchasing this drive to look it up. For me, the drive has been performing impeccably. As I keep transferring any new files I create to this drive, it keeps getting written everyday. S.M.A.R.T. reports life of the drive is still 100% after almost 2 weeks of use. My review here is subjective and specific to my use of the device as a storage which will carry my data over to the new system, with the flexibility of using it either as a primary storage device (with enough space for my data) or, as a fast secondary storage device, if my new system comes with PCI-e storage as primary. In conclusion, I purchased this drive after spending a lot of time researching my options and this drive performs exactly as I wanted it to. I look forward to another decade of rock-solid reliability and performance with this Crucial MX500 1TB SSD drive. Keep up the good work Crucial!

Now I'm not super knowledgeable regarding what makes SSD great (cache, SLC, etc.), I am still really satisfied with the performance of this SSD in particular, as it has definitely been really useful for storing games and ensuring they load quickly, compared to using a traditional spinning hard drive. Value is also great especially during sales, so it'd serve as a great gaming drive until games start implementing DirectStorage technologies, which would then require an NVME SSD. Even then, it could be used to store other files or programs that you may have on your PC/laptop. However, price of NVME SSDs has been decreasing as well, so it really depends on which you can find at a lower cost, especially since NVME do still have much faster read/write speeds.
