Best sociology text book ever. I studied this when did my applied social science degree, and found it highly relevant to my career. My daughter is now studying A level sociology, and this was bought specially to assist in her studies, as the teaching she was receiving left something to be desired. This book will get her an A grade in sociology if she reads it thoroughly. Really glad its updated and still available. If doing Sociology buy it, highly rated.

This is an excellent reference book for students of sociology and social work. I am a student social worker and I am finding this book very helpful as it is clearly written, up-to-date and explains theories and concepts in straightforward language. It is well worth the money and unlike other works of this kind I find it an interesting read, and not at all 'dry'.

The definitive book for any social sciences student or teacher.

This is an excellent book. As someone who regrets not taking Sociology at sixth form, and instead spent his gap year doing it, I thoroughly recommend it. While I started with the 7th edition (pub. 2008) I jumped at the chance to get this latest one, which has fantastic up to date studies. While this A couple of slight criticisms, which is why I have only given it 4/5. Firstly, unlike in the previous edition, the chapters don't have their own contents pages, so it's harder if you want a specific section of a topic. Secondly, I assumed from the description that globalisation would get a chapter to itself (as is the case in Giddens' Sociology and Bilton et al's Introductory Sociology), however it was tacked onto the final chapter. While this gives a basic covering of the key debates, given that Global Development is one of the topics at A Level, it's a shame that it doesn't get the in depth analysis that the others receive. Finally, there are some topics which I feel could have been included that were absent, cities/urban studies and organisational sociology. While both get minor sections again in the final chapter, these are very interesting, if somewhat neglected, areas and it would be good to have them covered in detail within such an accesible text. Overall, this is indispensible, easy to use text of a fascinating and constantly changing subject. I hope it will be just as useful to me when I go off to university this autumn.

This book is large and has so much information regarding sociology happy to have it at home as it would be a struggle to carry this to and from the library
