During our deep dive a few of us discussed any problems with the translation from Russian and finding Dosetovsky’s real voice rather than the translator. I know that sounds pretentious but when reading philosophy and prose it was important. For me this was the best version. Easy to read text with good annotations for explanation and research. Let’s just say hardly anyone reads this book for fun but for a challenge so it was great to have a good translation. Book review wise it is one of the best books ever wrote get a student guide to get the most from your reading. A masterpiece and well worth the time and effort Review: Deservedly classic - What an extraordinary and wonderful book! It feels real, that these people exist beyond the pages. Funny, shocking, profound, delightful. All life is here.

A great novel
Now read for the second time, this is for me Dostoevsky's greatest novel. From the very comic meeting in the monastery (at least I find it comic) of father Karamazov with various others to the burial of a young boy at the end, so much unfolds. The dialogue is often nightmarish and the actions of the various characters often equally so - as well as virtually incomprehensible at times. Amid all this the various themes close to Dostoevsky's heart are played out; among them the existence of God and the coming to be of the "modern" mind where perhaps "all will be permitted".

The Brothers Karamazov
A unique book that leaves you with some of the most memorable characters and images you will ever find in a novel. Besides the main plot, which gets quite wild at times, it also reaches into the 'accursed questions'; God, human destiny, the future of Russia, Brexit (Okay, the last one's not true). May occasionally be slightly hard-going but it can also be quite awesome, and it's well worth the effort. I think that everyone should read it at least once in their lifetime.

A classic
Not the easiest read, but a great story and insight into human nature.

Simply outstanding
One of the best books I have ever read and I do read plenty. Reading a translated version of a Russian book, I was sceptical at first but the more I read the better it got. This book touches your deepest emotions. I will be reading other works of Dostoyevsky.

essa versão é a mais extensa das traduções, mas teoricamente a mais fiel ao texto original. um retrato de uma sociedade não tão diferente da atual, descrita brilhantemente por dostoievsky

One of Russia's greatest novel superbly translated! Entrancing, lively, diverse ranging from theology to psychology and yet thrilling. Worth reading and rereading.

Don't be put off by the first half, that could seem clunky and contrived. The second half is truly sublime.

This is not an easy book for modern readers because of the obscurity of the Russian era depicted as well as the philosophical underpinnings of Dostoevsky’s novel. It requires a study guide or an outline to fully appreciate, but it’s well worth the effort for a serious reader. Dostoevsky’s portrayal of the three Karamazov brothers and their relationship with their father is one of the great themes of world literature. The two major female characters, Grushenka and Katya, represent the polar figures of women in Russia of that era. It’s standing as one of the greatest novels of the 19th century is undisputed. The chapter entitled “The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor” is a brilliant section that has been discussed and debated since its publication. I have read “BK” three times in my life, and this Pevear and Volokhonsky is undoubtedly the best one. (I listened enthusiastically to the “Audible” version as I read the text. It helped bring all the major characters to life.)
