how do you get a good tension on all the lines?

You don't! only 2 of the 5 lines have good tension and the rest sag

Says 5 lines which can be independently tensioned, how?

On the right of the device is a knob which if turned tensions the lines, however this does not do them independently - it does all 5 lines together. Also when you place considerable washing on the lines they do sag quite a lot even if you have tensioned it as much as you can (mine actually bent the pins the extended part fixes too due to weight, but did not deposit the washing on the floor)- hope this helps
