Q: Is the unit waterproof, can it be submerged?

Yes, it can be submerged into the water. That's the only way to clean your pool.

Q: Will this filter out algae that has settled on the bottom?

Not really. I'm battling algae in my pool and got this particular vacuum for that very reason, so I wouldn't have to vacuum to waste. I used it today, after floccing the pool and it just poofs all the fine algae particles into clouds and back into the water.

Q: How often do you have to replace the filter?

I’ve probably used the vacuum about a 1/2 dozen times and with each use I’ve emptied debris 3x. Each time I emptied debris I have sprayed the filter and it still looks brand new.
