Simplified Sight-Reading for Bass

Ideal Timing Workout
I previously owned this book in 2006 and it really helped with timing and sight-reading of bass notation. After an 8 year gap this was the first book I looked for.It lays out increasing difficult timing patterns and each is introduced on an accompanying CD, so you know how it should sound.I would recommend to all levels from beginner to experienced players.

Great
So far this is the best sight reading training book with audio I have experienced. But first, why 4 not 5 stars? The audio examples have the metranome setting so slow that it is actually really hard to count it right. There is too much gap between each beat. That said, you can use it to get a basic idea and then set your own metranome to play to. But that means that you need to be quite good with the rhythm already! The other reason is that it doesn't cover various time signatures. This is great if you only ever want to play in 4/4 time. I would have liked other time signatures covered also, especially the difficult ones like 12/8.So now the down sides are out the way, the good points are that it is easy to use. The CD is useful and it strips away reading pitches so all you have to do is rhythm. They picked one note for most of the book and then added in more note pitches later on. This does mean it sounds boring droning out the same note in different rhythm, but it means that you have more ability to concentrate and zone in on the pattern and grouping of the note and how they sound in a basic rhythm. Often it is difficult not to use expression and artistic flare when there is a tuneful pitching. This takes that away. Not everyone will get on with the droning sound of this book but it is worth it.This is designed for a bass guitar but I don't play bass. I play Trombone and Clarinet in two different bands. So despite the book being bass cleff I can play a trebble clef based instrument with this. Of course it won't sound like the note played so I have to either adjust my pitch, or listen to the cd as referece but then play it without to a metranome in my instruments pitch. Why? Because I don't want to train myself to play the D written when it is a B for me, the accidently play wrong notes in concerts. So whatever your instrument or cleff, this book can be useful. You could play along with the CD while transposing from one clef to another of course. But I try to keep to the simplicity the book was intended to bring. I bought this in 2012 a d I still use it now in 2021. I would like to see the same kind of book but for other time signatures but so far there hasn't been any follow on books. Shame, this has been more useful than anything else so far.

Useful exercises - tricky to download audio
some nice excerises in the book - a little tricky to download the audio. It seems it will only download once and haven[t been able to download onto my tablet for travelling purposes - have to Google first all the time, tricky if no internet connection.. Although this may be my lack of IT knowledge. We'll see if I can resolve situation when I have the time.A good tool for the beginner to intermediate player though.

Excellent bass exercises
Love this book. excellent exercises and downloadable content so you don't have to store another CD. Just keep working through at a steady pace and it is amazing how quickly you can pick up things that seem hard to start with.,

Really excellent, I've played bass for many years but never got round to sight reading and this book has helped me a great deal. I would recommend to any bassist with missing or poor knowledge of the instrument.

Claro y didactico
Es un buen libro para profundizar un poco más tanto en ritmo como lectura, hablando de un nivel algo más de lo básico.Ejmplos claros y concisos.Una pega es que no todos los ejercicios tienen audio.

A valuable step for the self learner!
I am 12 exercises into the book and so far I am leaps and bounds beyond my previous experience. I taught myself theory but was never able to learn to sight read music. You will definitely want a rudimentary understanding of basic theory before buying this book. However it is definitely a next step once you have started down that path.
