Lovely colours in a well made Pencil
I purchased these pencils after doing a fair amount of research on them. Full disclosure - I'm not a professional artist so my skills are at a beginner level but I have several artist grade sets of coloured pencils so I think I have a sense of what makes a good pencil. I think my true score would be 4.5 stars as many of these pencils are not lightfast.I didn't think I would like a pencil with a harder core but these are an exception. I don't find them to be that hard actually - they are firm but still have loads of pigment in them and don't bother my slightly arthritic hands. Not like cheap student grade coloured pencils do. I like the size of the pencil. And especially the colours are quite different from my polychromos and Prismacolor. All in all, very happy with my purchase. Just wish I could get open stock in Canada!Pros :Lovely soft colours not found in other setsAbility to blend using light layersA harder core so maintains a point well with almost no breakageVery sturdily madeColours seem more natural than many other sets - good for landscapes, portraitsIf you purchase the 120 set the wooden box is to die forReasonable costConsMany pencils not lightfastNot as good for colouring books (in my opinion)

They are known for being soft and easily blendable, which is why I keep using them ...
Without getting personal, regarding other reviews, I have to wonder if some people here are actually reviewing the correct product because, in all the years I have been using these pencils, I can state that one thing they most definitely are not is scratchy. They are known for being soft and easily blendable, which is why I keep using them and buying them, time after time.As for this set, I've been wanting this one for a while, and having finally got hold of them, they do not disappoint. Colours go on easily, blend well and lend themselves to a wide variety of techniques. Nobody in their right mind would buy a set like this for use in a colouring book, and if that's what you're after, stick with something like Crayola. If, however, you are doing some serious work, these are the ones for you. They apply well on even very smooth paper, such as standard copier/printer stock, but really come into their own on something with a bit of "tooth", such as good quality drawing paper or cartridge.Don't sharpen them with an electric sharpener, either. You'll chew up the ends and get a point that breaks easily. Better use an old fashioned hand sharpener, or better yet, a craft knife and sanding block.

Good pencils, but they need to change the tin
They arrived on time, sooner than I expected. Very good quality pencils, nice colours. I have 3 quality of Derwent: light fast, drawing and this one I bought now, artists. what I don't like is the tin, poor quality. The pencils don't fit properly in the box and the plastic broken very easily. I had to put them in a case. I have cheap pencils and the tin is better quality. Derwent pencils are high quality pencils, professional level, they deserve a better tin box.

Quality, fast and cheap!
To me, this is the ultimate pencil for art, and I've desired it for years. It's all I expected and more. The box has the WOW factor that makes you want to work with it, and the pencils (for the most part) are far superiour to standard pencils.Concerning shipping, I'm really impressed. It took four days from I ordered them, 'till I had them, and shipping was free. Very good job Amazon! Only one pencil lost it's tip in transport, and one corner of the box was kicked loose a bit, but both problems were easily fixable. The price is another bonus. I asked my lokal art supplier and they wanted more than double the price, so I'm a very happy customer!

The range of colours were amazing and I could wait to use them
This box arrived and I was a real big kid opening it. The range of colours were amazing and I could wait to use them. The sea of colours are luscious and you eat to dive in right away. The pencils are in an absolutly beautiful case and the smell that comes from all the wood is so inviting making you want to draw more than you often should. The 2lift out shelves are great but the one at the bottom is hard to see. The pencils are all anchored in, good in one way but a little bit of work when you want to pick a new colour. The pencils are a lovely size/thickness to hold. The end colours on each pencil are not that matching with the tips, but in time I will get to know the colours.Overall it is an expensive investment for this wonderful box of colored pencils and it took a lot of deliberation before I placed the order, but as I am seriously into adult coloring books in the end I did order.I am happy with a large selection of greens and blues as I truly believe that manufactures of colored pencils should produce larger selections like greens for lots of garden and woodland coloring books alone as well as blues and aqua's for the sea coloring books. This truly a missed avenue as every selection has smaller aray of these colours due to having all the other colours to incorporate. So a woodland green selection and a marine selection would be most welcomed.

These were much better than I expected
These were much better than I expected. From the reviews I was worried they would be too hard, and not color well. They were fantastic! While they are hard enough to hold a point, they color just fine, have plenty of pigment for good coverage, and I don't have to use too much pressure to color with them. They glide easily over the paper. In fact, they felt fantastic coloring with them. I also really like the shades of both black and white. I highly recommend them.

repeat derwent customer happy with these pencils
big appreciation for amazon offering a set of these with a damaged container/tin for a discount. i wouldn’t have purchased these otherwise – i already own a few sets of artists grade pencils. upon seeing the discount, i figured these would be great as a travel set, since the leads are more durable than prismacolor and i don’t want to carry around a set as expensive as my faber-castell polychromos. the price was right, so here i am. i stuck them in a more easily transportable case.now, every colored pencil type has its own characteristics. these are WAXY. depending on who you are and how you draw/color, this can either be a good or a bad thing. while the leads are hard, they’re still velvety smooth. the pigmentation is great. i can layer and layer with subtle layers, or i can go in hard for intense opaque coverage without concern over the leads breaking. i like that versatility. i feel like these pencils would pair well with dry pastel for mixed media work. good for detail work, with how well they sharpen to and maintain a point.as always, having the lightfastness information available through derwent is very helpful. this is one of the factors that sets these pencils apart from the cheaper stuff.i would not recommend these for beginners. novices, go for a set of prismacolor. they have an easier learning curve. professionals and students, however, will find aspects of these pencils to appreciate. they’re not bad at all – just not for everyone, with their texture.

Artist line of coloured pencils from Derwent
I really enjoyed working with these pencils. Hard core, it does produce some dust if you're heavy handed with your pencils. Also I wasn't thrilled with the pallet of reds in the 120 count set. Having said that the pencils were a joy to work with.
