I don't know how this game got such good reviews. If you've played the original Killer Instinct games, maybe you'll know what to expect because the game has not evolved much beyond that - in fact it's lost some of the features I recall as I don't think 'fatalities' are there any more.Essentially the core gameplay boils down to tapping buttons in a certain sequence so as to allow you to make heavier, more damaging attacks, while not going over a certain limit that will cause the combo to end, and also while defending against similar attack chains by your opponent. In practice that mostly means mashing the buttons madly with little thought of strategy or positional play.The biggest annoyance for me though is that, aside from a few special moves (which are underwhelming and ineffective to say the least) the controls and combos for each character are basically identical. Since the game mostly centres around these combos anyway, I found that every character - of which there is an impressive array - felt absolutely identical. They looked different, some of their attacks looked different - as far as I could tell since the animation is brief, chaotic and choppy - but there was never any need for me to adapt my strategy to play either as them or against them. Everything came back to button-mashing with little or no nuance. Compare that to a game like Injustice 2, where every character feels entirely different from the others and promotes different kinds of strategy, and you have a weaksauce game clearly pandering to die-hard fans of the original, when what the series needs is a reboot with modern sensibilities in mind.

It has one foot in 1990s and a great story mode namely shadow lords but internet connection is required for that.
