Fantastic mortar and pestle, with enough weight to it to mean it will stay put as you use it.Couple of things to bear in mind -Because of it's weight, size and the fact it's made from rough cut stone, it will gouge and scratch softer work tops. You may want to pick up something to put under it if you have a wooden or laminate counter top to put it on.It need's to be "worn in" before you can use it, otherwise you run the risk of grinding granite in with your spices initially, as the inside surface of the mortar is not perfectly smooth and needs to be worn down. To this end we used a small bag of pudding rice that had been stuck in the back of the cupboard for a while, (as the flavour is pretty neutral and unlikely to affect the taste of anything you grind later) and ground out small portions of the rice into flour over the course of a few days, till we were satisfied that it had been suitably ground down.Finally, as with any other cut, untreated stone, this thing will mark if you get it anywhere near something greasy, so if you only want it as a decorative item, you may want to consider putting it in a location where it is unlikely to be touched by someone with greasy hands, or resign yourself to needing to wash it, often...

This is a great Molcajete-style Mortar and Pestle. Solid and heavy, it's easy to work with. There will be some who would want it to have been larger, but at 4.5 kg, it's heavy enough already!On the downside, the feet on this will almost certainly scratch/mark any surfaces, so care should be taken to put something underneath (I use an anti-slip rubber mat or an old clopping board, YMMV).Also, both the Mortar and Pestle need to be 'worn in'. On mine, there are tooling ridges from the manufacturing process which can be smoothed out simply by using either rock salt or rice and grinding them down to a powder. This is quite a laborious process and can take quite some time to do. Initially the salt looks dirty (slightly grey), but eventually it will become purer and whiter.Definitely a worthy purchase.

This is a very useful tool to have in the kitchen for any botanical or herbal uses. When using this to grind down even the toughest herbs and spices, it happenes with ease. Definitely would recommend! :) esp to anyone who is used to using polished small/to medium mortar and pestles. You may just be suprised at how much better this one is. 😁

No help being given even after receving it cracked

This is a very good product, large enough and heavy enough to grind and mash lemon grass ect , good size for starting base for curry ect. Very happy no complaints at all, does exactly what it says on the tin, although now kids have got involved in showing an interest in learning how to make different dishes I'm gonna have to get another extra large one . 😀Colin in Edinburgh

Heavy effective molclette, produces nicely ground spices and peppers.

Seasoned with rice the first time. Strong and sturdy piece and very useful. Only complaint is with the pestle was longer or better shaped for ease of holding it.

Genuine granite pestle and mortar, weighing over 6kgs, so suggest it is kept on a solid surface and out of harm’s way. Initial reluctant thoughts as to how much use I would make of it. However after 2 months I can safely say that it is proving to be a very useful kitchen tool, making light weight of crushing garlic, chillies and herbs. Being entirely made of granite it only wears better the more it is used and requires only a paper towel wipe down by way of cleaning.
