Q: Will this effect the breathability of the leather?

Leather is dead and doesnt breathe

Q: Would using resolene or tankote perform the same function prior to antique??

I have found pro resist to be the better option before antique. I had the antique discolor the resolene and did not sit right. Tan kote pealed and cracked when I tried it as base coat before antique. It depends on what you are using it on also. The combination for non bending items, I often find is different than for belts. Which need to bend and flex. I'd say give pro resist a try for sure and experiment on scraps with base and top coat combinations to find what works for you.
