Zircon Leak Alert WiFi - Smart Electronic Water Detector Alarm with Email, Audio and Visual Alerts
Update December 20, 2020: I have two of these and can honestly say that they really work. I have had them for nearly two years now almost without a hitch. I have had to set them up several times because of WIFI glitches mostly of my own making, I must add.Update March 21, 2019: Both of my units still 100% functional with no glitches or indication of low battery, this is goodness of the best kind.Update March 16, 2019: Putting this up front because it is important. Adjustment for Daylight Saving Time should be built in to the firmware. I suppose getting the alert should be enough but knowing exactly when it happened can be important also.Setup was easy and it does work. That is the good, once setup I can no longer see it in my browser or use it as an access point. This may be caused by the fact that it is connected to WI-FI via an access point. Also the first two times I tested it I git a low battery alert in my email, after that I didn't.Update: October 22, 2018: These thing are great. I still get a low battery alert but only when I test the device. Have not received one any other time. One observation: If the owner is not nearby when the alarm goes off they better have an alternative person to see if there really is a leak. I don't know which is worse: having a leak when you can fix it or being alerted to a leak when there is nothing you can do but worry,,,Update January 23, 2018: While I still can't speak for the reliability of the leak detector I can say that the Zircon company provides tremendous customer service. I had reason to contact them yesterday for a problem, that turned out to be of my own making, and Frank was kind, patient and very understanding. He knew the product well and lead me to the final solution which was a conflict in my router setup. Thanks again, Frank.Update January 27, 2019: I hope my experience helps someone, this is a decent product:I just tested both units again and the one by my water heater worked OK. It is about 12 feet from the router on the same level. The unit in the laundry room failed so I replaced battery (again) and reconfigured it (again). and now it seems to be working. This unit is also about 12 feet from the router but on a different level, one floor below. I don't know what the design range is for these units but I feel they should have been designed with a little more WIFI strength built in.Both of my routers are Linksys and relatively new (AC2200/AC1750). There is only one wooden wall or floor between them and the leak detectors but they are definitely not uninterrupted line of sight.Update January 28, 2018: Knock on wood - Both units have worked well for two days now. It may be that I have gotten the correct positioning for them to work reliability.Update March 4, 2019: I have developed a system for using IFTTT to turn on something (in my case a Red Lamp) when the Leak Detector sends me an email alerting me to a leak. It goes like this.I use Outlook (Hotmail) but it should work for any email service)You can also create a rule on your account that if the email came from a specific sender, it will automatically be forwarded to your other account. Here's how to do it:1. Sign in to your email account and then go to your Inbox page.2. Click on the gear (settings) icon located at the top part of your screen next to your username and then select More mail settings.3. Under Customizing email, click on Rules for sorting new messages.4. Click on New. Under Step 1: Which messages do you want this rule to apply to?, on the first box with dropdown list, select Sender's address then on the second box, select is. Lastly, type in the email address.5. Under Step 2: What action do you want to apply?, select Forward to and type in the email address where do you want the emails to be forwarded.6. Click on Save. The email from the leak detector would be forwarded to [email protected] IFTTT setup an applet that will trigger on any email from you as the IF action and an action of your choice for the THEN action, in my case it was to use Smart Life to turn on a WIFI outlet with a red light bulb. This is all tested and works very fast. I went downstairs to trigger a leak email and by the time I got upstairs the red light was onI hope this gives other users an idea of how powerful all this stuff is and usefulUpdate March 11, 2019: Just added neat new IFTTT Applet that will call my cellphone if my warning lamps are turned on. This was the feature I really wanted and is easy to implement assuming you have completed the steps I have outlined earlier in this review

Easy To Use / Battery Discharged Upon Receipt
1+ YEAR FOLLOW-UP REVIEW: I now have three of these sensors. As I said in my initial review, the batteries the sensors are shipped with are either junk or partially discharged on arrival. All three required the batteries to be replaced in short order, I suggest you order batteries with the sensors and swap them out before even doing the setup. Units also have another flaw, where the low battery alert is sent, but the battery is too low to maintain the wifi connection, so you never get an email alert. I only figure out that a battery is dead when I fail to receive the weekly "heartbeat" email from a specific sensor. New quality batteries last from 9 months to a year plus, depending on the sensor, there's some variability. No leaks yet (good by me) so no report on their ability to detect a leak. When I test them, they respond immediately and I get an alert in a few moments, so they appear to function as they should. Lowered my rating by 1 star for the battery issues.INITIAL REVIEW: Just an initial review, will check back in a year and update. Easy to configure and place. Had the same issue many people have where the battery received with the unit was mostly discharged. I'd ordered a pack of 123 batteries when I bought the sensors, so I immediately replaced the battery. Be aware that you do not have to re-configure the unit after replacing a battery, it retains the setup info, and sends you a "battery changed" message afterwards. Nice. We'll see how it works in practice.

Cheap insurance!
Excellent product! I've used Zircon stud finders for decades and have always found them to be very durable products. These are no different. I'm so happy I was able to find something outside of the alarm system I was contemplating buying that works better than what that system provided for water detection. I ended up buying one for each sink and toilet in the house along with one more for the water heater. At $40-ish bucks a pop, to have these stand-alone and capable of dependably sending instantaneous alerts is a bargain. Cheap insurance and some peace of mind when you work 50 miles away from home! And if you'd rather get a text instead of email, you can always filter and forward that email to your phone. The only minor issue I had was that the last one I set up has a low battery out of the box. Not worthy of a deduction in rating, although it is bothersome.

It works... well for awhile. Then it doesn't.
### Updated... It's Dead Jim #### I bought it in November and now in Feb it's dead already. I stopped receiving the emails awhile ago and finally got a chance to check it and it's dead. Not what I would call reliable. :(Wow, it actually works! It's such a shame they can't do this for reasonably priced smoke/fire detectorsPositives:Really nice and easy setup. The little wires on the side detect water pretty easily. You can set it to send you an I'm alive reminder email every week.Negatives:Not sure how waterproof it is. If you get a lot of water it will go into the unit (it has a hole on the top for the siren) so it may become a paperweight. The I'm alive email is nice. A low battery email would also be nice to have. The email alerts are sent via an Amazon AWS server (to help them not be labeled as spam) but if that service goes offline, or they decide to shut it down after so many years, your unit will cease to send email alerts. You have to trust this little Ios device that is on your local LAN and obviously phones home to Zircon every so often to check for software updates etc..
