Q: What is the differance between a 5yard and an 8 yard kilt

Deeper and more pleats as stated above. Traditionally men's kilts are normally made with 8 yards and women's with 5. Men's kilts typically having more action in movement then women's. But that's not a hard rule. The yardage has nothing to do with the length (hip to knee) of the kilt unless that's how a kilt maker specifically differentiates the two. On that note men's kilts tend to come to mid knee to a third. Women's kilts really have no length rule but above and below the knee tend to be viewed more as effeminate especially if they are far above or far below the knee.

Q: Is this kilt adjustable at all? I measured 47.25 inches around at the belly. I worry what will happen if I eat too much haggis.

Yes, the kilt is 1" adjustable (either way). I would strongly recommend you to go for a 48" as it probably gonna fit better than the 47".
