Great Short Works of Fyodor Dostoevsky: Classic Russian Literature – Masterpieces Including The Gambler and Notes from the Underground (Harper Perennial Modern Classics) Review: Interesting information - Honor student 15 looks for books that are above what normal students read, Review: the full spectrum of humanity explored - Dostoevsky writes for the common man. mostly accessible sometimes convoluted. "Notes from the Underground" is a bit tedious but drives home many great points. to have a conversation with a fellow person one must agree on terms (2 x 2 = 4) but humanity can not be reduced to a mathematical equation (y=mX+B) or you invalidate free will...so the "truth" lies somewhere in between. "White Night" takes you in to the mind of a hopeless romantic who can't tell the lady he loves her. where does Hallmark come up with these ideas? it is really here. "The Double" was censored beyond recognition. this is the 1866 Dostoevsky approved version. there are many others available for those who care to study one story. so eight stories in all. if you want to complete the experience this volume should satisfy most.

the full spectrum of humanity explored

Seriously GREAT stories
Seriously GREAT Stories. And I'm not exaggerating. I intend to offer my more literary children a copy of this in their adulthood. Doestoevsky has an uncanny insight into human nature. The stories are at once comic and tragic. I only wish I had his wit.

genius author with microscopic focus
emotional detail of characters motivations excellent---but leaves judgement to readers

Good collection, Low quality type + paper
The paper is thin, and the splotchy text is not only difficult to read, but bleeds through the pages. Not the worst, but not great. Personally, I'll be returning this and looking elsewhere for a better quality collection.

A nice hors d'oeuvre
I would have rather it had more short stories and eliminated one of the novellas, but that's minor. It's Dostoevsky...who among us really has the hubris to criticize the writing?

A good collection...
While this doesn't include all of his great works, this is a great start for anyone wishing to taste his literary genius. I bought this as a prerequisite to Crime and Punishment and am happy to have started here. This collection will give you a good variety of his short works.

Do Not Buy
Find another edition. The print in this one is blurry, tiny, and very unpleasant to read. Whoever was in charge of the project should be fired. I seriously doubt if many people who've bought this edition ever read their way through it.

The product was damaged a bit in the bottom right corner, all the pages have a crease/fold on that corner.
