Understanding today from yesterday
Firstly, this book informed my historical understanding of how white settlers, indigenous American Indians, African slavery all fitted together as part of American history. From this, themes of colonialism, subjection , cruelty, destruction, racial cleansing and so many more are considered through the lens of modern 20th century impact. It ends with the importance of questions, as to me, the way forward is still so bound in a past that to many is still so blinkered and subjective. It gives me hope because these wrongs are beginning to be examined, within the universal context of love and family.

Too long...too preachy
I thought the author rambled on and editing should have been far tighter. Enjoyed the stories of the characters, less so the very longwinded politics/preaching that took over a large chunk towards the end - also the education sections - very confusing and dull, especially if you're not American

Disappointing
I bought this book on Kindle.I really really had high hopes for this book when I started reading it. I could hear in my head the character’s accents and they way they spoke which I love. There are two stories running together, which I couldn’t connect. The story was so predictable. I was enjoying the most up to date story, but I wasn’t enjoying the story based well into the past to the point I hated the characters. The more cross I became the more I disliked the book unfortunately.I have a theory that there are so many brilliant books out there to read, and if my heart isn’t invested in what I am reading, I’m just waisting time. I absolutely hate to shelve a book.So I have put it to the side and maybe I will pick it up again when I feel up to trying again with it.This isn’t a book I would recommend unfortunately.

Exquisite writing
Exquisite writing that drew me on ..even clarity in setting out timelines and generations at opening was impressive ..but it's the voice and the nuance about love that finally comes through. I'd been reading du Bois recently and was attracted by that name in title, so I was slightly expecting something Different but more-than-settled for this beauty.
