A seminal history of Romney Marsh

The only guide I found to a unique part of Britain. Its strength is combining the impact of geography (waves, flood, wind, coast), human impact (farming, draining, barriers) and history (from cavemen on), to give an understanding of why Romney Marsh area looks so strange today. The author has enormous experience and knowledge. That makes it dense, with not much narrative or colour. It is more of a reference than an easy read, but I recommend it to visitors interested in lanscape or history.

I purchased the book after reading reviews of all other histories available of Romney Marsh.This is a very thoroughly researched book that is not a particularly easy read being so full of detail. The book could do with a little bit of wit and some anecdotes to hold the readers interest. I would describe it as a text book to dip into for facts about the history of "the marsh".Recommended with the above caveats.

An absolutely wonderful book and one I shall treasure.

A serious bit of reading about my maternal heritage . Informative what I was hoping for. Would have liked a few more modern photos for comparison.

This dispels a lot of what was considered established fact by drawing on recent excavations. I found it very useful as a reference book with interesting source material.

Easy and clear in style, this book offers plenty of historical and local info for the person looking into the area or just interested in making sense of the landscape around them.

Well-written, well-paced, informed, informative, and a nice mixture of morphology, archaeology, history and social science. The scope is, of course, quite small but it is a enjoying read.
