On the whole it's very good. It doesn't give you enough time to review all the routes to determine the best one - that might be because I haven't worked out how to work out routes offline yet. Occasionally there is a minor glitch in the routing or the spelling of a town

At last a Sat Nav for Motorhome that can be heard over a loud engine. This acquisition is well worth the money I spent. I highly recommend for a motorhome or caravan, so easy to use and follow

Easy to setup, just entered my campervan dimensions. Was already useful on a trip to Norfolk by avoiding a restricted width road. Would have been a nightmare otherwise as I'm pretty sure i would have missed the road sign. Very easy to use and good quality display and speaker. Only thing I don't like is that you have to connect your smartphone via bluetooth to get live traffic and other updates. That was quite tricky to set-up and seems to fall over quite a lot. But not a massive problem and I would definitely still recommend.

We bought this on the recommendation of “Wandering Bird” a motorhome reviewer who has an excellent web site with lots of helpful information about owning and using a motorhome. So far we’re delighted with it. It takes away the crippling fear I had years ago with my first motorhome when I’d duck and cringe every time we approached a low bridge. You input your van’s height, length and width and it plots a safe route avoiding low bridges and narrow unsuitable lanes. It’s a game changer and really reduces the stress of driving a large vehicle, leaving you more relaxed to enjoy the journey.

As with all satnavs common sense and forward planning are required. Does what it is supposed to do pretty well

I bought this expensive piece of kit expecting 21st century technology. Whilst I’m sure the hardware is very good and seems to be solid and very well made, I’m afraid I was sadly disappointed (maybe having owned an iPhone for many years, the bar has been set too high?). I remember the good old days, when sat-navs first appeared on the scene. Great at navigation (most of the time), but try connecting and loading updates and software etc – frustrating to say the least. I never actually got to try this latest offering from TomTom on the road since I was unable to successfully load Caravan Club POI’s and sent it back working on the philosophy my time is more important. It should have been dead straight forward and it was not. Some annoying points: I was unable to login to the device when it is connected to a PC (ooops, try again later); The accompanying PC App, constantly takes you out to another web page where you have to login again). Loading POI’s is not in an obvious place and the software tries hard but fails at being intuitive (maybe it’s me, but I’m normally very tech savvy, so I think not); the touch screen I found jerky and a poor experience when compared with a modern phone screen. Click on the wrong link and be taken to pages of pages trying to flog you expensive subscriptions and add-ons. Sorry TomTom, I know this is not the price of an iPhone, but it only has to do a fraction of what an iPhone can do and for me, it sadly failed I’m afraid.

The unit worked for roughly five hours. On its second trip out it failed approaching Bristol City Centre. The screen went black and that was it. Customer service is a robot and whilst the videos may have helped with many problems it didn't with a black screen. Eventually you might get through to an agent in India who do their best to help but if you take more than three minutes to provide information such as photographs of the blank screen or a scanned copy of the Amazon receipt you are cut off. The only solution is back to the robot. It took me hours before they agreed to take it in for repair, not replacement. A shipping label is sent via email for the unit to be sent to Romania for repair. I have sent it but frankly don't expect to see it again. I feel that it is very unlikely that I will buy another Tom Tom product and I suspect I will have to purchase a new GPS for our touring holiday. Edit - the unit has been returned after around twenty days, the packaging was badly damaged by the courier but the screen survived. This is a replacement unit, I'm not sure if it a new one. It came with a screen protector that was grubby and distorted which I couldn't fit it without air bubbles. I have fitted loads of them in the past but this defeated me probably because it had been bent. The unit seems to work but not been used in the motor home yet. I'm still not happy as it should have been replaced with a new one when it failed. I didn't want to spend many frustrating hours trying to get the issue resolved. I don't know if other manufacturers have the same repair policy but I'm not sure I would buy another Tom Tom product and will check to see what happens under warranty, if that is possible.

Nachdem unser Navi nun in die Jahre gekommen ist, wollte ich mal wieder aufrüsten. Bisher hatte ich ein TomTom Navi mit 5“ Bildschirm verbaut, aber diesmal wollten wir ein größeres Navi haben. Da wir den VW Caddy gerne zum Campen benutzen, sollte diesmal ein spezielles Camper Navi her. Der Platz ist ausreichend und so fiel die Wahl auf das TomTom Go Camper Max mit 7“ Bildschirm, der weltweiten Kartenabdeckung und noch weiteren Extras. Ich habe es nicht bereut. Den handlichen Karton geöffnet, sehe ich als erstes den Quick Start Guide - darunter das 7“ Navi, sehr beeindruckendes großes Teil. Außerdem gibt es eine stabile Halterung, ein Anschlusskabel und einen separaten Stecker für den Zigaretten-Anzünder. Das Heftchen lasse ich erst mal liegen und schalte das Gerät ein, es folgt ein Trommelwirbel und der Schriftzug TomTom mit Logo, nach ca. 20 Sekunden kann ich dann die Sprache wählen und mich durch die Konfiguration klicken. Die erste interessante Sache ist der Fahrzeugtyp: Auto mit Wohnwagen, Wohnmobil oder Auto kann ich hier auswählen und dann ins Detail gehen mit den Abmessungen, Gewicht und Höchstgeschwindigkeit. Außerdem wird der Motortyp und die Kraftstoffart abgefragt. Dann wird eine Verbindung mit dem Telefon über Bluetooth-Tethering hergestellt. Das ist wichtig, denn das Navi erhält seine aktuellen Daten von meinem Smartphone aus dem Internet. In der EU haben wir damit kein Problem, in USA benutze ich immer ein SIM-Karte von dort. Aber was ist z.B. in der Schweiz? Muss ich da um meinen Internet-Traffic fürchten? Das konnte ich auf die Schnelle nicht herausfinden. Jetzt noch eine Verbindung zu meinem Wlan-Netzwerk herstellen (für die regelmäßigen Updates) und beim TomTom-Konto anmelden. Das Konto habe ich schon von meinem bisherigen TomTom-Navi und kaum habe ich mich angemeldet, sehe ich auf dem neuen Navi meine bisherigen Routen, POI und Orte. Das neue Camper Max ist startklar. Das 7"- Display ist brilliant, klar und hat eine schöne übersichtliche Darstellung. Ich merke, dass hier ein schnellerer Prozessor verbaut ist und viel Arbeitsspeicher, ruckzuck habe ich das erste Zeil erfasst und sehe schnell die Route auf dem großen Display. Erst mal gucke ich in die Einstellungen, das Navi ist auf dem aktuellsten Stand, für die Karten werden mir bereits Updates angeboten. Sehr schön ist es, dass ich einzelne Länder auswählen kann und so erst mal nicht die ganze Welt laden muss. Ich aktualisiere schnell mal Deutschland und die Nachbarländer und lade mir die USA für den nächsten Urlaub. Nun geht es ab ins Auto, schnell und sicher ist das TomTom mit der schönen Halterung an der Windschutzscheibe, kann aber auch mit einem Click von dieser abgenommen werden und ich freue mich über die schöne Darstellung. Endlich mal sehe ich die Ortsnamen auch ohne Lesebrille. Das 7“ Display ist für mich schon jetzt ein Gewinn. Sobald eine Tankstelle auf dem Weg ist, sehe ich auch gleich den Spritpreis im Display. Dieser wird aus einer Datenbank geladen, ist aber leider nicht immer aktuell - aber das Problem kenne ich auch von Spritpreis-Apps. Dieser Service ist mit dem Navi für ein Jahr kostenlos dabei. Ebenso gibt es für ein Jahr Radar-Infos. Mal schauen, ob mir das soviel Vorteile bringt, dass ich es später erneuere. Gestern war ich auch bereits eine Strecke von ca. 100 km über Land mit dem neuen Navi unterwegs. Die Informationen sind - wie von TomTom gewohnt - sinnvoll und hilfreich. Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungen werden fast auf den Meter genau angezeigt, wie auf den Schildern an der Straße. Auf der rechten Seitenleiste kann ich mich gut informieren, ich sehe Tankstellen-Infos, Stauhinweise, Vorschläge für eine bessere Route, voraussichtliche Ankunftszeit - gefällt mir alles sehr gut. Schon beim erstellen der Route sehe ich im weiteren Umkreis alle Staus und Behinderungen. Allerdings bei einer längeren Strecke nur für den ersten Teil (200 km ? oder so) das ist schade, wenn ich das für die ganze Strecke sehen würde, könnte ich mich eventuell schon vorab für eine andere Route entscheiden. Mein Fazit nach den ersten Tagen: eine klare Kaufempfehlung für das neue Tomtom Camper Max. Wer den Platz an der Windschutzscheibe hat, sollte sich auf jeden Fall für ein 7“ Navi entscheiden.

Sono sempre stato un utilizzatore fedele dei prodotti TomTom. Il mio vecchio Rider 500 mi ha accompagnato per anni, portandomi ovunque, anche in viaggi estremi, senza mai lasciarmi a piedi. È stato un compagno di viaggio affidabile, preciso e robusto, capace di guidarmi “fino in capo al mondo” senza esitazioni. Quando, dopo il furto del mio precedente dispositivo, ho deciso di acquistare il nuovo TomTom Max, ero fiducioso: mi aspettavo un’evoluzione tecnologica, un prodotto ancora più performante, in grado di gestire senza problemi le esigenze di un veicolo complesso come il mio — auto con caravan a rimorchio, per un totale di 12 metri. Purtroppo, la realtà è stata ben diversa. 🚧 Errori di navigazione inaccettabili Il primo campanello d’allarme è arrivato già nei primi mesi di utilizzo. Nel comune di Scicli, il TomTom Max mi ha fatto svoltare in una strada dissestata, con un guado di fiume e un sottopasso impraticabile per le dimensioni del mio mezzo. Il risultato? Una buca ha danneggiato l’attuatore del mover della caravan, con una spesa di 280 euro per la riparazione. Ho cercato di giustificare l’episodio: un errore può capitare, anche al mio fidato Rider 500, seppur molto raramente. Ma purtroppo non è stato un caso isolato. 🌍 Viaggio verso NordKapp: un incubo tecnologico Quest’anno avevo pianificato un viaggio fino a NordKapp, in Norvegia. Alla prima prova seria, il TomTom Max ha mostrato tutti i suoi limiti. - Inserendo direttamente NordKapp come destinazione, il dispositivo si bloccava durante il calcolo del percorso. - Ho provato a “spezzare” il viaggio in tappe intermedie: fino al sud della Norvegia tutto bene, ma per raggiungere il Geirangerfjord il navigatore escludeva inspiegabilmente alcuni chilometri di strada perfettamente percorribili, costringendomi a deviazioni lunghissime. - Pianificando lo stesso percorso dal sito TomTom, con le stesse impostazioni di veicolo, il problema non si presentava: segno che il difetto è nel software del dispositivo, non nei dati cartografici. Ho provato a cambiare il tipo di veicolo nelle impostazioni, ma nulla. Alla fine, è stato Waze a portarmi a destinazione senza problemi. ❄️ Oltre il Circolo Polare Artico: il colpo di grazia Dopo il Circolo Polare Artico, ho riprovato a impostare NordKapp come destinazione. Stesso risultato: blocco immediato del navigatore (vedi foto) Ho tentato un hard reset, ma il problema persisteva. In un viaggio lungo e impegnativo, con tempi stretti e tanti chilometri da percorrere, trovarsi fermi a combattere con un dispositivo che dovrebbe aiutarti è semplicemente inaccettabile. Ancora una volta, Waze ha salvato il viaggio. In quel momento ho deciso: TomTom non farà mai più parte dei miei viaggi. 💻 Interfaccia mal progettata Come se non bastasse, l’interfaccia del TomTom Max è un esempio lampante di progettazione poco attenta all’uso reale: - Nella barra laterale, le icone di aree di sosta, distributori e autovelox si sovrappongono. - Se un’area di sosta si trova a un chilometro da un distributore, vedrai solo una parte dell’icona. - Stesso problema se un distributore è poco prima di un autovelox: l’informazione più importante rischia di sparire. Basterebbe una soluzione semplice — ad esempio, alternare le icone a destra e a sinistra della barra — ma evidentemente chi ha progettato il software non ha mai usato il dispositivo in condizioni reali. 📶 Connettività instabile Infine, la gestione del tethering Bluetooth è disastrosa: - Disconnessioni frequenti e improvvise. - Necessità di disattivare e riattivare manualmente il Bluetooth dello smartphone per ristabilire la connessione. Quando si viaggia, soprattutto in zone remote, l’affidabilità è tutto. E il TomTom Max, purtroppo, non lo è. ⚠️ Conclusione Il TomTom Max si è rivelato un prodotto inaffidabile, mal progettato e frustrante. Tra errori di navigazione potenzialmente pericolosi, blocchi inspiegabili, interfaccia confusa e connessione instabile, non è un compagno di viaggio ma un ostacolo. Dopo anni di fiducia nel marchio, questa esperienza mi ha convinto a voltare pagina. Sconsigliato senza esitazioni, parola di chi viaggia davvero e sa cosa significa affidarsi a un navigatore.
