Does anyone have any tricks to getting this to seal without over tightening?

make sure that the rubber seal from the old filter comes off with the old filter when you remove it. occaissionally the rubber seal will stick on the mounting surface, especially if it is a first time change. once you have checked that , pour a little splash of NEW oil onto the new filter a little can go inside but you are doing this so you can put your index finger in the oil that sits on top and then smear it around in a complete circle covering all of the new oil filter's rubber seal. now you are ready to put on the new filter. hand tighten and then turn one quarter turn more. i have been doing this for 40 years and never had one leak yet. other advice- buy an oil filter pliers like this - https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-5866-12-Inch-Filter-Pliers/dp/B000NPR33O don't waste your money on other kinds of oil filter wrenches

(max): 0Capacity: 0Filter Area: 0They appear to have very similar qualities, but I think the 12-050-01 (Wix 51056) is slightly taller and has a better micron rating (meaning it will filter smaller particles,) but calling Kohler directly at 800.544.2444 would probably be the best way to make sure.

Are these kohler filters? the picture has none of the printing on them like my oem kohler filter does.

The box mine came in says Kohler 12 050 01-S on it and is bar coded, so I presume it is a Kohler filter. There are no markings on the filter itself. I presume the "S" indicates it is a slightly shorter filter which allows it to fit on the engine I have that has a side-mounted filter that just fits against the mower frame. I have had no problem with the filter fit or operation.

Will this model (12 050 01) substitute for 52 050 02? I thought I ordered the right #, but I received this part instead.

the Kohler engine manual shows that you could have either. the12050 01s is 2 1/2 in. the 52 050 02 s is 3 3/8 in, I think it depends on whether you have clearancefor the longer filter. I stayed with the original number to be safe.

OEM filter for your Kohler engine

It's the OEM filter for various Kohler engines. Obviously, it fits like you need it to. It's no easier or difficult to install compared to others. I don't know how filtration compares to other products, but since I don't appear to use oil between changes I'm assuming it's doing something right.I'll buy another next year most likely.

Fits Kohler 7000 series engine, Cub Cadet XT1 LT50 fab deck riding mower

Definitely less $$ than the Kohler OEM oil filter, which runs over $20. The oil filter had the "Kohler" decal on it. Overall, the filter is slightly shorter than the OEM filter but fits like a glove...same diameter. Recommend hand-tightening only...go just shy of a full turn after the rubber gasket makes contact with the engine housing. Always rub some oil on the rubber gasket before installing. I generally fill the filter 1/2 full with fresh new oil as best practice...though whether you fill the filter with fresh oil or not, before installation, will not likely cause any issues. Perfectly good oil filter replacement.
