This is truly one of the best films Patrick SwAzye made in his life time. It has it all, the reluctant hero, coming through when needed (Swazye) the strong female lead Pauline Collins, and a shed load of needy people mostly played by the actual Indian People themselves, including a wonderful Indian actor who stared as Dad in East is East and West is West. His name I have to admit to have forgotten to look.Basically it is about a man who learns many important lessons guided by some of the most poorest people in Indian, people marred, disfigured and pushed aside. They are able, through all their hardships living on the Fringes of society to find joy in living, hence the title. CITY OF JOY. (Relating to the shanty town they live in)It is on the hard to find list of movies, and can be extremely costly to buy. The copy I have purchased is mostly in Korean on the cover, with a few English sentences. However, it plays in English, with subtitles in English and Korean. This movie is formatted to play in Britain and Europe. Always wise to check. As a lot of American movies sent from there will not play here.So, if you like movies with a full rounded storyline, with pathos, empathy, Saddness and humour, then City of Joy is this kind of movie.

Once in a while a film comes along that has the power to change your mind about certain pre-conceived ideas. This is one such film. City of Joy never shys away from the power of its message and its graphic picture of life in a poor part of a large and spralling Indian city. Yes, at times it can be a little hard to swallow - the big American doctor (Patrick Swayze) waltzing onto the scene - but its not over sickly sweet and you come away feeling that you have been taught a valuable lesson. That life is for living, not for spectating and you must live each moment and treasure each experience; savour it. You never know when it can be taken from you.

I’ve been trying to get hold of this film for years, it’s an amazing movie that had a big influence on my life as I saw it at an important stage. This copy is fine, plays in English without subtitles, which is what I wanted. The movie is old and looks very low-quality filming compared to what we are used to, but that’s just because of when it was made. The storytelling and acting are extraordinary. It took a while to arrive as it was coming from so far away, but it was here sooner than expected and in good order.

I purchased this after a long search, having enjoyed the movie many years ago.It was a huge disappointment. The item will not play on our main Panasonic player only a smaller secondary one which is inconvenient but not more than the appalling quality of the dvd, it looks as though it was recorded from a tv, is very dark with exceptionally poor quality sound. I will not use this seller again and would not recommend them.

I Am a Patrick Swayze fan, great film, I have watched it several times on video and at the cinema when it came out. Had no problem playing it, picture and sound just fantastic, no extras on the DVD, shame. The film transports you to another place, shows you how difficult it is for some people to survive in this world and still be content with their lot, makes you realise how lucky you are to live with comforts in a well off country. Patrick on form as usual but even if you're not a fan this is still one to watch.

Vor langer Zeit das letzte Mal gesehen - und wieder fasziniert. Da ich selbst in Indien gelebt habe, kam mir so Vieles bekannt vor, allerdings nicht das Kalkutta der 50-iger Jahre. Der Kauf hat sich für mich in jeder Hinsicht gelohnt, denn der Film wird im Verwandten-, Freundes- und Bekanntenkreis seine Runde machen

Personal viewing. This was another great Patrick Swayze movie. Didnt hear much about it when released. Really shows what life is like in India and the need for good Doctors. Will watch this one many times. Highly recommend.

I have been watching so many Patrick Swayze's movies, going thru all that I have in my collection and recently added thru Amazon. I always thought he was a really great artist with many distinguished talents but this film amazed me. He seems to always do movies that have heart. Patrick was living in a city that had a lot to offer, the best medical equipment, but losing a child along with other pressures, he felt he needed to escape; yet life's problems seems to be every where. He ends up in a place called the "City of Joy",that looks hopeless. Among destitution and crime he finds meaning again and peace worth staying, practicing medicine again and fighting for the people that have touched his heart.

The Academy Award for Best Film of 1992 should not have been Unforgiven...it should have been City of Joy. This film daringly takes you straight into the heart of the slums of India. Patrick Swayze is the lead and excellent as usual, but his co-star Om Puri is the actual star of this film, giving such a riveting performance. Om is so good that it feels like a real-life documentary in every scene he is in. Om deserved an Oscar for this. Such a remarkable cast and film. Sad that it's long been forgotten. This Korean made DVD is pretty good quality, but seriously this should be on Blu-ray and available everywhere.
