Did you ever blow dandelion clocks and play "he loves me, he loves me not"?
Then buy this book! It's an absolutely beautiful combination of fabulous photography and simple text which points out so many connections between plants and numbers. The concept is really intriguing - that you can find in a park or garden a great variety of ways to demonstrate the mystery of the Fibonacci sequence. OK, I've lost you now - no, come back! I'm not a maths nerd! Honest. The Fibonacci sequence (which is something I never understood at school and certainly wouldn't be on my list of everyday phrases) says there is a pattern 1,1,2,3,5,8 etc where each number is the sum of the two which come before it. Hmm, "that's exciting", I hear you say. This book makes it FASCINATING. The photos make you desperate to count the petals on a flower, peer into a sunflower and turn a pineapple upside down in the search for these special numbers. I'm not sure I'd agree with the recommended age group here - 9-12 year old kids in the UK are different from their equivalents in the US. I'd buy this book for garden lovers who need a new eye on the world, for kids struggling to cope with words like "Fibonacci sequence" who will suddenly be able to get it once they see the pictures and anyone of any age who loves beautiful books. I'm off to find a pineapple.........

This is for young readers only. There are 32 printed pages and very little text. Its ok to introduce kids to the Fibonacci numbers.

Great way to keep learning interesting and applicable to the natural world.

Perfect book for children who are fascinated with the Fibonacci sequence. (Enjoyed by adults, as well.) Thank you.

My pre-school aged grandchildren enjoy both the colorful pictures and figuring out the math pattern as they look at the pictures and read about the pattern. I am a middle school math teacher and I enjoyed reading the book to my middle school students during our recent unit on number patterns. This is the first "regular" book I've found that fits so well into the math curriculum. The book brings to life what would otherwise have been just another number pattern. This book helps bring math alive in beautiful pictures from nature. Many students don't see the beauty of math and science, and they don't see math in the everyday world. Growing Patterns can help change that. My school librarian and other math colleagues are eager to share this book with their students.
