Q: Can't connect red one

It should connect, please follow the steps below - 1. Turn on both headphones. 2. Turn OFF and BACK on the transmitter. 3. Wait 3-5s for it to auto-reconnect to the transmitter. IF the RED headphone NOT, you can: 3.1. Wait for 3s and then quickly tap the middle silver button ONCE. You will hear a long beep, and the RED Headphone will announce 'Connected'. 3.2. If RED headphone failed to reconnect, quickly tap "2" button on the transmitter once and WAIT 3-5 seconds. The RED Headphone will announce 'Connected'. Q: Can these connect to the seat-back movie/tv screen on airlines, using an aux cord? I prefer watching movies on that instead of my tablet.

Yes, you can connect the transmitter to the headphone jack and enjoy movie wirelessly. You can even connect the headphone directly to the port with wire. Of course, if use on airlines, we suggest Aria Pro / Me series as those come with Active Noise Cancellation.

Q: Can I adjust the volume for each headphone set individually? Or is a “global” volume set from the base unit?

Each individual headphones can control it's own volume level and it is not controlled by the base unit transmitter.

Q: Can one headphone be linked to a Fire Tablet and used away from the home (a nursing home)?

The headphones require the transmitter. If you plan on one headset being in one location and the other in another then the answer is no. That is of course unless both locations are within range of the transmitter. Shocking that the manufacturer didn't make this clear.
