Excellent program!
I purchased this for my 7 year old who is in second grade (homeschool). He really loves the workbook and wants to do all the activities for the week in one sitting. The words are not too hard. I can easily see him finishing and moving on to the third grade level before finishing second grade. Each week has a spelling tip/rule which the words fall under. For those who would like to know. . . the words in the first lesson are fox, cut hill, wind, put, all moon, saw, tell, new (which seem very easy for 2nd grade). Week thirty-five's words are hole, whole, no, know, not, knot, ate eight, to, too, two, right, write, one, won. I think our local public schools did these type of words in 1st grade. My son did not have "formal" spelling last year so I don't mind starting him off with easier words. I've found it is better to start easy and build confidence than to ruin a child's self-esteem with something too hard. I do believe; however, that if your child has already had formal spelling it would be easy to move on to level C and skip level B.I have tried many spelling programs over the years (with my oldest son) and my children rate this one as the best. It has interesting activities such as crossword puzzles, find the missing letters, proofreading, etc. My favorite part is that each week the child has a short story to read that uses all of the week's spelling words. The stories are usually educational too! If your child enjoys short activities to reinforce what he/she is learning, I believe you will find this program a perfect fit.

Great supplement to Spelling!!
I saw mixed reviews for Spelling Workout A, but decided to go for it anyways. We started with this book because my daughter is 7 yrs old and does very well with Spelling. When it arrived she had this look on her face like "Oh great, another textbook". But, I sat down and did the first level with her and she was soooo excited! She loves the proofreading section! I think it makes her feel like a teacher grading. =) I actually had to make her stop after Level 1 because she wanted to keep going through the next few pages. She even asked if we could continue tomorrow! The next day I asked if she wanted to start with Math or Spelling for the day (Math is her favorite subject and we always start with that, so I figured I knew what was coming), and believe it or not she said Spelling! She was so excited to start and smiling through the whole thing. Activities are short, which is great because they're not so long that the child gets frustrated and bored. It's long enough that they get excited and have fun, but short enough to keep their interest. We currently work with Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading by Jessie Wise and I use the words in that book as her Spelling words. This book is a great supplement for that. I highly recommend this book!

Good 2nd grade spelling book!
We homeschool our three boys, and I’ve used Spelling Workout for the first two boys, and now with my 7-year-old. The exercises are easy to do, and if you don’t understand what answer they’re looking for, you can easily look it up in the teacher book. The first 4 books are really good. If you have a strong speller-reader, they will start to get bored with how easy it is. I can’t speak for the other books, but the first 4 are really good. Some criticize the black-and-white photos and the small space to write the sentences, at the end of the lesson. But my kids never had a problem with it. If you want a more colorful book, this won’t work for you. But if you like something that simply explains spelling rules and is easy to understand, this is a good choice!

Very Happy
First of all, we started using Spelling Power earlier in the year. That method is okay, but very dry/boring for my students and they just didn't have enough repetition with words. I was looking for something more "traditional" I guess. This workbook is very well done. I have a 6th and 3rd grader working out of their respective workbooks. My 6th grader's vocabulary and critical thinking are definitely put to the test. Although he's an avid reader, this workbook really helps with his vocabulary! My 3rd grader just loves the workbook. He would rather spend all of his time finishing up each lesson than work on other subjects. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a spelling curriculum that kids can do independently and keeps them interested.

Our favorite! (And we've tried many...)
We've tried MANY different spelling programs (including spelling power, Sonlight, etc.) and we keep coming back to this one. It's very easy to use and the activities keep the kids interested and even mildly entertained. Each week is set up the same: intro story a paragraph or two long, spelling rule stated, 3 different exercises (fill in the blank, crossword, alphabetized, etc.) - mainly to just keep the student writing and thinking about the words, then an editing exercise, and finally a creative writing assignment (a short paragraph in which they try to use words from the list). We generally do one list per week - a couple exercises per day, a pre-test, then the test. I've used this for kindy through 5th grade. My kids have not struggled with spelling so far - I can't really comment on whether this is particularly suited for struggling spellers. This is a book recommended by Susan Wise Bauer in The Well-Trained Mind.

Classroom teacher using these books!
I teach grades 1-4 and use this curriculum. The kids are able to work independently which is very helpful in a multigrade classroom. I wish there was a placement test as I had 3 students this year begin in their grade level and then end up needing to go up a grade or two in these books. I make a photo copy of the take home word list, onto card stock and then cut out each list and laminate them for the kids. These lists are printed and in alphabetical order. This helps the students that have a harder time reading the cursive writing in the workbooks. I like this curriculum and will continue to use it for my classroom. It goes through grade 8, which allows me to use higher books for my advanced spellers.

Fishy spelling
The stories at the front of each unit are interesting to read and discuss. It works with words in lots of ways... Word boxes, crosswords, alphabetical order, complete the sentence synonyms, antonyms, and meanings. I really like the section to practice editing written work.

Fast delivery. Good lessons. Some of the writing exercises aren't that motivating. Tend to skip them.
