Almost everyone can imagine that being at sea for long periods imposes a serious strain on those away and family left at home. That is obvious and easy to understand. The book is built upon the narrative of thirty nine crew members. A chapter is devoted to each one. They all very briefly describe how they came to serve and what they do in a submarine. Much more time is spent on describing the effects of being separated from family. By the time I had read three chapters of this it was beginning to get tedious. Unfortunately there was another 36 chapters which were just more of the same.

Trues stories of life on board Submarines
Being a retired Submariner I still love any book that's factually based about Submarines and the submarine service. This book has all that, there are many testimonials from the men that have served in the Royal Navy Submarine Service giving many different viewpoints of what life is like on board a British Submarine on patrol.Well worth getting.

Good book but spoiled in many ways.
Having spent a full career in the Royal Navy, but not in 'boats', I purchased this book as it looked extremely interesting. Indeed it was excellent to begin with, but then simply drifted into a series of interviews with various members of the ships' company and various other people associated with the submarine. I feel the author has taken the easy way out of writing what could, and should, have been a fascinating insight into an area of the Royal Navy that many don't hear or know much about. He was given privileged access to a submarine at sea for a number of days and appears to have 'set up shop' in an out of the way area and simply recorded interviews with the crew. Once back on terra firma, he has presumably transcribed these interviews and voila, the book goes to print and he earns a healthy income from those of us foolish enough to purchase it. What a waste of an opportunity in my opinion.

GREAT BOOK GREAT WRITER
Book was a 'used' item and quite old in age, but still in brilliant condition. Well written by acclaimed journalist/documentary maker. Arrived before scheduled time. Great service all round. Thank you.

Having served twice at Faslane myself, whilst with diesel " Boats " and Polaris Boats, I am amazed at the amount of Sea Time the modern submariner is required to undertake. I'm sure the Polaris boats had 2 crews on rotation. This book opened my eyes. JK
