Being Academic: The core skill
Although the text is fundamentally targeted at post graduate students it is a valuable text for any academic wishing to enhance their critical reading and writing skills. The text is highly structured and needs to be read from beginning to end in order to fully benefit from the methods presented. For undergraduate students looking to get higher grades the text gets you thinking more deeply about criticality and for the seasoned academic it confirms much of what you already do, is likely to add some new ways of thinking and offers a range of different structures with which to approach critical reading and writing. The structured development of theory and application to examples of articles through the use of 'the mental map' approach clarifies the intended use of theory through illustration. The text culminates in applying the skills and theory developed throughout the text to a doctoral level dissertation. However, the principles can be usefully applied by any student, researcher or higher education lecturer. Overall an excellent text of great value to a wide range of academics that clarifies a potentially mystical issue of the nature of criticality. Although the author acknowledges the limited treatment of the philosophical positions due to the complexity of the topic I feel that the text would benefit from further development of this fundamental underpinning issue. However, this should not detract from the great value to be gained through adopting the ideas and skills developed.

Great guide for structuring your writing
This book was invaluable to me doing my MA and is still something I go back to very often as a PhD student. It contains thorough and comprehensible ways to approach critical reading, structuring your writing, and constructing arguments logically. I would highly recommend this to any student!

Good foundations for learnig to be critical
I have found this book to be helpful and relatively easy to understand. I would recommend it for just before starting a postgrad course, as once you start your course you may not have time to look through it. Particularly good if you are not much of a critical thinker.
