This is a fine tool, light in the hand, stainless steel, well made. It is sharp as a knife on the cutting faces, where it meets the tooth to scrape. The probe/pick ends also come to sharp points. Think needles and scalpels, it's a real medical instrument. Be cautious, aware and able to focus attention when using this. Know what you are doing. People are using these on pets at home. Untrained people should do a web search and read something on teeth cleaning basics for pets, at least.In humans, bits of tartar carrying dangerous bacteria can enter the bloodstream through even tiny cuts in the gums, tongue or mouth. In health compromised or at-risk people, an infection of the heart (Bacterial Endocarditis), caused indirectly by teeth cleaning, can cause rapid/sudden death. Dentists take medical histories to determine if pre-medication is necessary. Some people need antibiotics before cleaning their teeth, to prevent this terrible possibility.Use you head if you use this tool, and good luck!

Very good professional tool. A bit scary at first, and a mirror helps when scraping calculus off the back sides of teeth, but you can also do it by feel: the tartar feels more rough and scratchy than the smooth tooth surfaces. I had a pretty big deposit on the back of my lower front teeth, which were pressing uncomfortably on my gums, and it felt great when it popped off! You don't have to be aggressive, the way they do it at the dentist: they have only 30 minutes to clean years of deposits, whereas you can do a bit every day at home and be more gentle. It's not rocket science: dental technicians don't need special training either! The only thing I haven't tried is to go under the gum line with this tool (although I've seen discussions by dentists who use jacquette scalers for that purpose too).

Not really the tool we thought we were getting. Husband finds it useless, I use it but not thrilled with it. Quality is good but not really a good cleaning tool.

I gave it 3 stars, mostly because at it's price point, it must compete against companies like Brasseler and Nordent. Both of which are superior products, and usually you can get free shipping with those.The product itself appears well made and has held up to 30 sterilizations since I purchased it. My hygienists report that the handle is light and comfortable, and the tips hold their edge well.The item appears to have no real strengths or weaknesses.If these could be purchased at the $16.96 price and free shipping is included, I could see adding a star because the value would improve. As it stands now, I just ordered 20 items from brasseler on a recent promation, and my cost on those was 10% less than the reviewed item.

The dental pik is great for getting in between your teeth to remove plaque. I use the dental pik to get to the places my floss can't. I wish it was just a bit thinner to get in between my slanted teeth:) which is a very tight fit.

This scaler works excellent!!! It got the tarter off the front and back of my bottom teeth. My dentist appt is a couple of months away but I couldn't stand the tarter on my teeth any longer. I was really embarrassed by it. But this scaler really works!!! Also I used Plax because it helps soften the tarter to make it easier to remove. Forget those fake scalers,you need the actual ones the dentist uses. Like this one!!!

This tool is very effective and extremely sharp. If you are thinking about using it on a pet, please make sure they can't jerk their head, as this will surely slash gums or cheeks.
