Freedom for my cats, peace of mind for me...and my neighbors!
Although the shipping took longer than I would have liked, I finally received this and MAN, how did I ever live without this? I can't even imagine not having it now. Firstly, it is simple to put up, the instructions are so well written and clear, I think a 10 year old could do it. If you have an existing fence, you do not have to put this in the ground. I read on some reviews that this is a huge chore buying, and if you have a huge yard, I guess it is, but I just attached it to my fence, used my lawn edger to help dig a rut where there was no fence, and boom, it's up. After MUCH research for a couple of months, I decided on this because it isn't wireless. The big huge wireless box is not only ginormous and ugly, but it doesn't have good reviews overall, and is prone to failure for many reasons, including that the signal fluctuates and makes the boundary you set move up to 2' either way at any given time. First, you lay it out around the area you want to fence, making sure it's just as you want it. They include helpful tips and advice too to help you in deciding how to lay your fence. At first, I was just going to lay it around the perimeter of my yard, but they show all kinds of ways to protect your pool area, garden spot, and cover difficult areas. They also explain how to train your animal precisely, which I was kind of worried about, but if you just follow their instructions on what and how to train on what days, it's simple. Days 1-5 for example, you just walk your pet around with the unit off and give him treats when he avoids the flagged areas. You do this for 30 minutes a day or something. Then day 6-10, for example, you'd see if he avoids the area by himself, and if he does you praise him a lot and reinforce the training. It accelerates up to about 2-3 weeks with progressive training. Even an idiot could do it. There is some adjustment work just making sure it works the way you intended, giving you the opportunity to reset the wires or whatever. And of course, you have to fit the collar to your specific pet, since all pets are different sizes, fur thicknesses etc. But they tell you all about that, too. I just think this is a well designed product that works great. It seems like they have thought of everything, and they give you pet training tips and tell you what to do to leave your area with your pet (because you don't want them to be afraid to cross the line when they have to go to the vet, for instance). They explain what to do if your animal gets out of the protection area. You can buy additional wire, flags, a second or third collar, and anything else you need. They also include some waterproof gel to use in case you have to splice in additional wire. The gel is a capsule shaped container of gel that you put the spliced wire into, close it to seal, and then use, because you need your wiring to be waterproof. This particular unit is rechargeable, but I decided it was worth the investment so I don't have to buy the exclusive petsafe batteries that everyone thinks are so high. They don't seem that high to me, but maybe the non-rechargeable units use a lot of batteries. Anyway, this is a complete set with every little thing you could ever think of, even things that aren't pictured. It even has a surge protector included, so all in all a great price for such a great product. Now my cats cat climb over the fence to the cat hating dogs and people on the other side. They can't get into the street on the front of the house and get hit by a car. But they can have freedom to play outside, catch bugs, lay under the shade tree, roll around on the patio, bask in the sun, chase squirrels, and just be cats. I'm so thrilled I got this!!!! And so are my babies!!

Keeping our pets safe!
We bought this system 2.5 years ago for our dog and cat. It has worked fantastic. We also bought the break detector since we accidentally broke the wire and that made it easy to find where the break had occurred. Both of them know where the line is and they won't go beyond that point. They'll sit there and wait for us when we've crossed over the line. We don't let them out at night since there are coyotes and Bobcat around the area at times. So we take their collars off at night while they are inside and put them on in the morning when they go out. Can't say enough good about this system. We've got them in a contained area where we can keep an eye on them and they are safe.

Works for small fierce cat so far
I have a 1yo small but mighty female cat that was a perfect angel of course for a while when it came to our fenced in yard but after her second late night adventure over the fence I immediately bought this and had it delivered that same day. It took some troubleshooting and mind gymnastics to figure out how to make it work with our partially fenced in property. I just wanted it on the fence but didn’t want cat afraid of the fence. It took 2 more adventures over the fence, changing certain areas of the fence to low to the ground, upping the collar to maximum and us watching her like a hawk for an hour to realize the collar was too loose and she was feeling nothing so I tightened it to as small as it would go. As much as I wanted a come to Jesus correction for her I felt bad but for her safety and happiness we had to do it. I’m very surprised a level 5 affected her but did not traumatize her. She was calmly sitting in the yard when I brought her in playing happily in the house Only downside is I really wish they made a smaller collar for cats. Edited to add a few months later: boy did this take some troubleshooting and learning on the human and cat’s part. After a while, it wasn’t affecting her. Maybe her winter coat was growing in? Called Petsafe customer service and they were great! I bought a specific cat collar through customer service for her but the biggest thing is I had to change many areas to the wire being low to the ground on the fence. I think she would jump over, get shocked then figured she’s already there, might as go all the way. She had to start getting corrected for even going near some of the areas. So far so good. She could be out for many hours and may just come back in on her own for a nap.

A High Quality and very Professional Product!
Everything in this package is very high quality. The collar has 5 settings - tone, tone w/correction levels 1 thru 4. It is rechargeable and the literature says a charge should last about 2 months. Included is 500 feet of solid core wire; because of the way I had to layout the perimeter I needed to buy another 500 feet. A local pet supply store carried it for about $18. Laying out and burying the wire is the most labor intensive and time-consuming part of the job. I just wanted to "fence" in the backyard and opted to run the wire around the back, then back track along the same path in order to complete the loop. Other options include running the wire around the front of the house or up and into the roof line (gutters?) or attic, which Petsafe did not recommend. As far as burying the wire, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you search local rental places for a wire-feed trencher. This machine costs about $70/day in Atlanta, was very hard to find, but was a huge help. In short, it digs the trench, buries the wire, and dumps the dirt on top of the wire. I still had to clear some areas in advance by cutting tree roots and moving rocks. However, once I got going I laid about 450 feet of wire in a little over an hour. As far as training your dog(s), the manual gives excellent instruction. You will need about 2 weeks of leash training, followed by 2 weeks of unleashed but supervised training. FOLLOW THE MANUAL - don't take shortcuts. It's easier to teach the dog right the first time than retrain a dog with bad habits. I now have 3 Papillons running freely in the back yard with no problems. They each had their quirks; one learned almost immediately, one so-so, and the other was hard-headed. I am convinced that by not taking shortcuts I was able to shepherd all 3 successfully through the process.

Best investment ever for my dog
Many years ago I had a radio fence for my Siberian husky’s, i got a golden puppy last August and tried the wireless fence first but the coverage area was too small. I returned it and got this model. Perfect. Two weeks in and I would say she is trained. She shocked herself twice and hasn’t tried since. She hears the tone and stops. She might lay by the boundary some and watch my neighbors dogs inside their fenced area, but that’s fine since the batteries are rechargeable, and she has much more room to rain than they do. Win win

This unit works, not like the other 3 i bought and returned.
Finally one that works. I tried 3 other dog fences and they either didn't work or failed immediately. This one costs more than $60 but it works. I didn't bother to train the dog with it but he learned quickly. He already knew he wasn't supposed to sneak off and when he did, he yelped. It makes him look funny now when approaching the fence and then he turns back. The unit puts out a graduating shock as he gets closer and the 4th. level (of 5) was substantial enough on the finger test. I have 2,000 feet of wire out and needed to use setting C on the transmitter. The variable setting - alarming distance knob - was a bit sensitive and needed to go between 7 and 8. This provided an alert distance of about 15-20 feet. Perfect for my needs. It seems to be consistent around the perimeter. It can alert up to at least 35 feet, if desired. I walked around the fence for a couple of hours testing with the light and picked the perfect alarm distance setting on the knob, and it was consistent around the boundary. The dog was about to get in real trouble if he wandered off to certain neighbor. I needed this unit to work. It did and has kept the 50 lb. smart but persistent thick haired husky wolf mix in the yard!!!!!!!, and alive. By the way, you can use the wire, it is pretty strong stuff, but solid core. I put out 2K' of 16 gage stranded wire, because I had it and it lays well. I haven't buried it yet, except where crossing driveways. I am very happy with it. So far it is much better than all the others I tried. Job complete. The pine needles bury the cable in a single winter.

BUY THE WARRANTY!!!
Not happy with the collars. We had a PetSafe fence/collar for several years that had to be replaced. The first product was one piece, easy to clean and didn't fall apart. The first collar also had a significantly louder tone for the dogs to hear. After only 8 months of use, one of the contact points on our boy's receiver collar came loose and fell out on the rug. We put it back in and tightened it. Two days later he comes inside and the only thing left is the collar. Both contact points came out and the receiver is in the yard somewhere. It's a balmy 6 degrees and trapesing around the 3 acres out back is not fun at all. We'll keep looking and hopefully, we find the receiver or we will have to purchase another one for $120.00. This is smart on the part of PetSafe because the alternative is to purchase another brand fence which would run $300 or more. For sure thinking of ideas to keep the receiver attached to the collar since it isn't something that was considered by the manufacturer. Or maybe it was and that's how they sell more collars. SMH UPDATE 5/2/18 Still NOT HAPPY with the collar. It's been in use for under a year and the contact prong has broken. The portion that screws into the receive is severed from the portion that makes contact with the dog. So I can't even replace it with a new prong, part of it is still in the receiver.
