If only it worked...
I got this book on a recommendation from another parent, to help discourage my then 3-year old from sucking her tumb. I think it is a great idea having a book like this. But I was not so fond of the illustrations, and the rhymed text is at times awkward; the book appears as if put together by creative preschool teachers rather than by a writer and an illustrator. Perhaps I would have been more complimentary if the book "worked" but my daughter not only has not stopped sucking her tumb, she also doesn't like me to read her this book anymore.

Little Thumb
A gentle way to help prepare a child to "put away" their beloved thumb. My 5 year old daughter understood the message in the book and still liked reading it over and over at bedtime.

-) It was a good addition to her library and she did want it ...
It's a cute little book but not convincing. My grand-daughter informed her mommy that she had a very "brave" thumb. :-) It was a good addition to her library and she did want it read several times so it was worth the price.

not at all convincing
When I read this book to my 3-year-old, I think it increases his urge to suck his thumb. The book tells the story from the thumb's perspective (the thumb doesn't want to go into a cold, dark mouth), but I guess my child doesn't care about what his thumb thinks. The book spends a lot of time talking about all the great things you can do with both hands (tie your shoes, catch a ball, etc), but this problem is easily solved by taking your thumb out for a minute and then putting it back in. I chose this book because the cover illustration looked like a boy, but the character is actually a girl. My son's dentist suggested reading books about thumb sucking as a first step to try to break the habit. I don't know how to get my son to stop sucking his thumb, but this book didn't have any effect.

Little Thumb Ventures Beyond the Usual
Little Thumb is a delightfully humorous story told partly from the thumb's perspective that includes a positive, playful plot and imaginative suggestions for engaging one's thumb. Having taught preschool for 20 years, I was glad to see Ms. Dionne address this sensitive, timeless topic so creatively. And the illustrations are charming and colorful. This story guides teachers and parents as well as young children.

weird freakin book
i bought this to go with the mavalia we bought to help my son stop sucking his thumb. Well the mavalia came first, the book a whole two weeks late! By then he had successfully stopped sucking his thumb with the mavalia alone. When I looked through the book I realized that the pictures were odd and the book itself was in a way disturbing. I really did not like anything about it. Do not purchase!

Great book but does not work alone
I loved the book, unfortunately, regardless of how many times I read it, it didn't necessarily work alone. She did stop thumb-sucking after I read this book MANY times and bought a kit at [...] Worth the money and saved lots of $ on future costs of dental work.
