Good dark stain

I spent a while hunting for the perfect stain color for a few items I was making for around the house. I wanted something darker than my hardwood floors, yet neutral, and without being so dark that it might possibly look out of place. To give you an idea, my floors are close to a what I would call a pecan colored stain, with my furniture being close to Minwax Provincial and kitchen cabinets close to Minwax Red Chestnut. Since I wanted to use this on items both in my living room and kitchen, it was important to me to find a shade that would work well with all the colors without matching any too closely. I had narrowed it down to Jacobean, Dark Walnut and Special Walnut and decided fairly quick that Special Walnut would be too light for me, which left me down to the two that were hardest to pick between since they are somewhat similar. After googling photos for ages to get a better idea of what they look like in person, I decided that Dark Walnut had just a bit more of a golden or warm tone to it than I wanted, so ended up settling on Jacobean and am happy that I did! I worked perfectly with all the other tones in my home and looks absolutely lovely! I definitely recommend using a light hand when applying or you may end up with a much darker color than desired. A little goes a long way, and while you can always build color and depth with additional coats, it is much harder to sand and start over if you go overboard ;P I ended up going with only one light coat and am thrilled with the results. The wood grain still shows through and is actually enhanced, which is exactly what I was hoping to achieve. It applied easily and evenly using a synthetic bristle brush, and any drips were quickly wiped up with a cloth without issue. It was dry to touch in about 6 hours, and set fully within about 24-36 hours, though it was fairly cold out when I used it so your mileage may vary. It was very well packaged and reached me safely, though it did take a bit longer than usual to arrive. It was exactly what I was hoping for and I absolutely would recommend Minwax Jacobean stain if you are looking for a beautiful medium dark neutral stain!

I've tried a great range of minwax stain colors, and the two I go back to over and over again are the Jacobean and the Red Mahogany. The Jacobean is, to me, exactly the color of deep, rich brown that I want wood to be, and it will penetrate down to an evenly warm tone even in really light woods like poplar; and all you need is one or two more coats. It's a good stain, wipes up well, doesn't drip, and penetrates evenly. You just have to be vigilant of glue drips because I haven't met a stain that looks good on glue, even so-called "stainable" glue. That being said, this one penetrates into glue much better than lighter colors, and I've found the end result to be more than passable. You get it on your fingers, and you're stained for days though.
