Our very sense of self is a fiction
Today the thesis of multiple personality disorder is largely viewed as discredited, partly because it cannot be treated with a pill, but the reality is that many people have multiple selves...have you ever "argued with yourself"? MPD is an extreme case of this. Richard Kluft's book, published in the mid-80's when serious work on this topic was just beginning, is a ground-breaking work which is as valuable today as when it was first published, perhaps even more so, given the hostile climate concerning MPD. This is a collection of essays by a number of clinicians, most of whom are MDs or PhDs or (frequently) both, and yet it is not a difficult book to follow. It is sad that only one other review has been written, and even that is cryptic and very short. It is very disconcerting to consider that our concept of self, our very sense of self, is a fiction, or at best, a useful tool in dealing with a complicated world that is truly beyond our grasp. This book is philosophical as well as helpful clinically, for those who are willing to work with the concept of dissociation.
