Is this paint safe to paint a birdcage?

Not if you want a bird to live there, in my opinion. Birds tend to use their beaks to maneuver in cages, even if they aren't clipped. Any paint will be ingested by their strong beaks when they do so. Your best bet is to talk to a veterinarian or a pet store and find out which are safe. Normally beyond paint choice, the cage goes through a heating process which makes it safe for birds. I have no idea where to go to get that done though, another question for your local veterinarian or pet store. Hopefully this is helpful.

can I use a top coat?

Yes, I’ve used a clear top coat many times but do not apply the top coat until the base paint is fully cured, I repeat fully cured. In my experience the base paint may orange peel when a top coat is applied at less than 4-5 days at 75F+ temps and <40% humidity. During the winter the colder temps and higher humidity increase the time for me to 7+ days. Exact cure time in my experience has been based on coating thickness and paint color.

How shiny would the "gloss" of this product be?

The "Gloss" option of this spray paint will give you the shiniest finish of your 3 choices. I personally prefer the satin finish b/c the gloss is a bit too shiny for my projects. If I find it's not shiny enough, I always have the option of going back over it with the gloss finish.

Can this be used alone with no other products ?
