could this be used a hang a mobile instead of using the fabric?

The fabric is attached (from memory, my little one has grown out of it now) so you wouldn't be able to hang a mobile from it. It's not really nesesary to have the canopy unless you are worried about mosquitos, looks nice but not really practical.

Can someone recommend a good alternative?

Yeah, I looked and looked online for an alternative. Asked at Buybuybaby store. I found nothing that would fit snugly. But what ended up happening for us is we would carefully wrap the mattress in a receiving blanket without leaving any wrinkles. Baby was small and didn’t move around in her sleep. So nothing got undone.

Has anyone found a different brand sheet that fits the Baby Bjorn bassinet and isn't so ridiculously overpriced?
